Greetings from San Antonio

Creating postcards from San Antonio

City Editor Nicholas here. San Antonio has a plethora of local artists. Fun fact: One of my favorite hobbies outside of delivering you news straight to your inbox every day is to take pictures. I started photography in 2018 and have gradually immersed myself in the art.

Recently, I’ve become inspired to dive into the film side of photography. Let’s feed the film and get started.

The project

I’m teaming up with local photographer Aaron Christmas to create something special for the Alamo City — and we want you to be a part of it.

Aaron and I will venture downtown (when there isn’t an excessive heat warning) to capture the beauty of our iconic landmarks + locals in their day-to-day activities.

The goal is to create a series of images that feel like postcards from San Antonio while expanding my photography knowledge and appreciation.

We’ll take our rolls of film, develop them at Digital Pro Lab (remember its art exhibit last year?), and share our images with you. You’ll see our photos side-by-side in this article, but this is where you come in.

Get involved

Grab any camera — your phone and the one that’s been sitting in the donation box count — and go out into your neighborhood to create your own photo postcard.

Photo submissions are open through Wednesday, Sept. 4. You are allowed to submit as many photos as you want, but they must include a visual element that directly connects to San Antonio.

SATXtoday: San Antonio Sandlot Baseball

Examples include a photo from a local sporting events (like the one above), music performances, festivals, or other local happenings.

Photos that do not include a local element will not be considered. Additionally, photos that include nudity or offensive language or visuals will not be accepted.

Happy photographing, SATX.

Remembering Xicanx artists

August is Xicanx Month in San Antonio

From the Alamo City’s larger-than-life mural landscape to its painters, photographers, and creatives, locals know that San Antonio is home to some of the best artists and institutions.

Let’s dive into this city-wide celebration, and learn about Xicanx Month.

The Chicano Arts Movement

The Chicano Arts Movement happened during the 1960s + 1970s across the US.

In 1967, one of the first art centers for Xicanx artists, Con Safo, started here in the Alamo City. Rudy Treviño would join the group in the 1970s and go on to be a co-founder and director of the Tejano Music Awards in 1980.

Treviño studied at San Antonio College with acclaimed painter Mel Casas. Both were large-scale painters during the Chicano Arts Movement.

Fun fact: Treviño was an art teacher at Lanier High School, and inspired his students to paint murals throughout the halls.
