Raise your hand if you get eaten alive by mosquitoes every summer. We see you.

With all the rain we received in July, the city is lush with beautiful vegetation. But with rain, mosquitoes are soon to follow.

City resources

Metro Health provides pest control services on public property (not residential) for mosquitoes using Vector Control. These reduction techniques help control the mosquito population on public property by eliminating the breeding source. One method used is called fogging and is carried out on an as-needed basis.

The goal is to protect San Antonio residents + visitors from diseases that can be spread via bug bite. Check out the latest mosquito abatement notices. The city also tests mosquito pools for West Nile virus and posts updates on positive locations frequently.

Tips and tricks

Here are five tips to limit mosquitoes around your property:

  • Keep the water in your fountains fresh and moving at all times.
  • Dump standing water in flower pots and buckets.
  • Clear and fill tree holes to prevent water from pooling.
  • Clear out derby from gutters.
  • Remove children’s toys and trash from the yard — water can get trapped in here.

Fun fact: A body of water as small as a bottle cap can produce one mosquito, while a soda can can produce ~20.
