City Editor Nicholas here. I got to play sports correspondent for SATXtoday on Friday, covering the championship match of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup.

I come bearing photos and game-day highlights just in case you need incentives to attend an international match at Toyota Field (and see our San Antonio FC too).

Fast Toyota Field facts

The stadium was erected in 2013 as the home of the former San Antonio Scorpions. Its owner sold the venue to the City of San Antonio in 2015 and is the current base for the Spurs Sports & Entertainment-owned USL team — San Antonio FC.

This isn’t the first time the 8,296-seat stadium has hosted different leagues or international matches. The pitch has seen teams from Mexico, Australia, England, and the US Men’s National Team.

Kickin’ it

The two leagues — NWSL and LIGA MX Femenil, Mexico’s highest division of women’s soccer — collaborated to create a summer tournament where all 14 NWSL teams and six top teams from LIGA MX Femenil battle it out in the Summer Cup.

The cup began on July 19 with 30 group stage contests followed by a four-team semifinal round. Fast Fast forward to Friday night at Toyota Field, as KC Current defeated Gotham FC 2-0. Congrats, KCtoday.

The international summer cup may be over, but the next event happening at Toyota Field is the Coca Cola Classic Christmas which starts on Friday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m.
