Whether you’re a sports fanatic — or just look good in UTSA orange— when it comes to sports, the Alamo City has no shortage of teams to support. Our city is home to some of the most loyal fans in the country — they even get Spurs tattoos.

In this guide, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about Alamo City sports, so whether you’re already a devoted San Antonio sports fan or you’re new to the area, we hope it can serve as a valuable resource.

San Antonio Spurs (NBA) | Est. 1973

Did you know the Spurs started off as the Dallas Chaparrals in 1967? The franchise has had multiple owners including the late Red McCombs and played their first game in the Alamo City at Hemisfair Arena. Legends — both players and coaching staff — are tied to the team including NBA Hall of Famers David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Steve Kerr, and Becky Hammon.

Where they play: AT&T Center

  • Opened in November 2002.
  • The venues two anchor tenants are the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and the San Antonio Spurs.
  • During the month of February, the Spurs embark on its yearly Rodeo Roadtrip to make room for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.
  • Frost Bank recently purchased the naming rights of the venue.

Mascot: The Coyote

  • First appearance was during the Spurs vs. Lakers game on April 13th, 1983.
  • Wears jersey number 2!.
  • Voted 2014 NBA Mascot of the Year.
  • The first NBA mascot to be ejected from a game... ouch.

Team colors: Silver, black, and white

  • Adopted their current colors in 1989.
  • The team occasionally wears their throwback colors — teal, pink, and orange.

Major accomplishments:

  • Three No.1 draft picks in 1989, 1997, and 2023.
  • Five NBA Championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014.
  • 13 players have been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

San Antonio Brahmas (XFL) | Est. 2021

After relaunching in early 2023 after a three-year pandemic hiatas, the San Antonio Brahmas are one of eight teams who kicked off their inaugural season here in the Alamo City. Owners of the league including Dany Garcia and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made a special appearance at the team’s first game. Head coach Hines Ward lead the team through their first season at the Alamodome.

Where they play: Alamodome

  • Opened May 15, 1993.
  • Can seat up to 72,000 spectators.
  • The dome was originally built to entice an NFL team to come to San Antonio.

Team colors: Black and yellow

  • Navy blue jerseys at home and gold jerseys for away games.
  • Player helmets has horns with a crackled finish.
  • Shop for merch.

Major accomplishments:

  • Several players have signed with NFL teams for the 2023-2024 season.
  • The XFL’s first championship game was held at the Alamodome on May 13.
  • 24,245 fans showed up to the Alamodome for the Brahmas season opener.

San Antonio Missions (MiLB) | Est. 1888

Once the Austin Senators, the team moved to San Antonio and then changed their name to the Cowboys. The team has changed their name six times before settling on the Missions and is the oldest sports franchise in the city.

Where they play: Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium

  • Opened on April 18, 1994.
  • Features 14 luxury suites, 6,200 fixed seats, a grass berm for approximately 3,000 fans, a Party Pavilion, Fiesta Deck, and patio party areas.
  • The stadium has also hosted multiple concerts, boxing matches, and Nitro Circus.

Mascot: Henry the Puffy Taco (1989) and Ballapeño (2000)

  • Modeled after the famous puffy, Henry the Puffy Taco features a puffy taco costume with a red hat.
  • Ballapeño is a green jalapeño dressed in a baseball jersey and hat.

Team colors: Navy blue, white, and gold

  • Typically wear the white jerseys at home and the navy blue jerseys at away games
  • Their Copa de la Diversión team the Flying Chanclas features blue and pink jerseys with yellow writing.

Major accomplishments:

  • Changed ownership in November 2022.
  • Over 70 former players have joined the MLB
  • Won 10 league championships
  • 27 people with ties to the team were inducted into the Texas League Hall of Fame

UTSA Football (NCAA) | Est. 2011

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) did not receive its first football team until 2011 under the leadership of Head Coach Larry Coker. The inaugural game featured a record crowd of 56,743 at the Alamodome. Current head football coach Jeff Taylor joined the team in 2019. The team has moved several conferences from Western Athletic Conference to Conference-USA and then the American Athletic Conference in 2021.

Where they play: Alamodome

  • Share the dome with the San Antonio Brahmas.
  • Opened May 15, 1993.
  • Can seat up to 72,000 spectators.

Mascot: Rowdy the Roadrunner

  • Originally named the Roadrunner and the suit was worn by Antonio “Tony” Gonzalez III.
  • Mascot wasvchosen on Dec. 9, 1977 by the Student Government Association

Team colors: Navy blue, orange, and white

  • Jerseys feature school name (UTSA), jersey number, and last name of athlete.
  • Football helmets feature the UTSA Roadrunner.
  • Shop for merch.

Major accomplishments:

  • Won their first bowl bid (Gildan New Mexico Bowl) during their sixth season.
  • David Morgan II became the first Roadrunner drafted into the NFL (Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 2016 draft).
  • Claimed the 2021 Ryan Conference USA Championship (first conference championship in the franchise’s history).
  • Ranked 15th on the AP’s Top 25 College Football Poll in 2021

San Antonio FC (USL) | Est. 2016

Beginning in 2015, Spurs Sports & Entertainment reaches agreement to play soccer at Toyota Field and by December 15, 2015, they purchased Toyota Field and STAR Soccer Complex from Gordon Hartman. The United Soccer League awarded the 31st franchise to Spurs Sports & Entertainment on January 7, 2016, allowing the team to begin playing that same year.

Where they play: Toyota Stadium

  • Designed by local architecture firm, Pro Sports Developments.
  • Built in 2013 for the San Antonio Scorpions.
  • Sold to Spurs Sports & Entertainment in 2015.
  • Holds up to 8,250 fans.

Team colors: Silver, black, and red

  • Toyota is a jersey sponsor
  • The team wears jerseys by Puma

Major accomplishments:

  • Captured the Player’s Shield in 2022
  • Won the USL Western Conference title in 2022
  • Won their first USL Championship in 2022

San Antonio Gunslingers (NAL) | Est. 2020

Starting up the legacy of the USFL team from the 80s, the Gunslingers were founded in 2020 as an expansion team in the American Arena League and consists of a 21-man roster (compared to 53 in the NFL). They joined the growing National Arena League in the fall of 2021. The team also changed ownership during the 2022 season and is currently lead by head coach Fred Shaw.

Where they play: Freeman Coliseum

  • 32,000-sqft facility.
  • Recent received nearly $50 million in renovations in 2015.

Mascot: Sheriff Power

  • Wears a cowboy hat, a Gunslingers jersey, jeans, and boots.

Team colors: Red, white, and blue

  • Two jerseys: white and blue.
  • Jersey features team name and jersey number with two pistols on the back

Major accomplishments:

  • 2022 NAL Franchise of the Year
