The feeling of dread we get when we see those triple-digit heat forecasts is something we do not look forward to. Fortunately for us, San Antonio has a Heat Plan in place for those just-in-case situations when the AC goes out, or if you need a place to cool off. Let’s break it down.
What is a Heat Plan?
Excessive heat exposure can have serious health effects. In order to be prepared, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, the Office of Emergency Management, Bexar County, and the National Weather Service have developed a Heat Plan to increase public awareness and lessen health risks during periods of excessive heat.
The plan includes four levels of heat conditions.
Level 4: Normal weather conditions.
Level 3: A “Heat Outlook” alert goes into effect when the heat index is 90ºF — 108ºF for two consecutive days.
Level 2: A “Heat Advisory” alert is when the daytime heat index is greater than 108ºF.
Level 1: An “Excessive Heat Warning” is issued when the heat index reaches 113ºF or higher.
Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and a wide-brimmed hat.
Use sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more.
Check the UV index to gauge how much sunscreen to apply. Pro tip: If the UV Index reads higher than three, take precaution going outside and wear sunscreen as well as sunglasses.
Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration.
This is going to hurt. Decrease your consumption of caffeine (and alcohol).
Where to stay cool
The city has put together an interactive map of all things cool. Think pools, cooling centers, libraries, and community centers.

As part of the city’s downtown revitalization project, Civic Park, there are new residential and retail spaces coming to Hemisfair. The City of San Antonio Historic and Design Review Commission has approved the designs for two new buildings.
This development is part of a public + private relations project with Post Lake Capital Partners and the Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation. Here’s what we can expect:
Buildings will sit on 2.14 acres
Direct access to the Riverwalk, Civic Park, and Market Street
Phase 1 of Civic Park is slated to open this September with a full list of seasonal events to follow. Construction and completion dates have not been announced for these newly approved mixed-use spaces.
When’s the last time you’ve been to a public library? These past couple of days I’ve been writing from the Mammen Public Library in Bulverde. The Hill Country views are immaculate, with the rolling hills in the distance, native plants + flowers, as well as hummingbirds and butterflies.
If you find yourself heading north, I highly recommend this hill top literature retreat.
