The feeling of dread we get when we see those triple-digit heat forecasts is something we do not look forward to. Fortunately for us, San Antonio has a Heat Plan in place for those just-in-case situations when the AC goes out, or if you need a place to cool off.
Let’s break it down.
What is a “Heat Plan?”
Excessive heat exposure can have serious health effects. In order to be prepared, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, the Office of Emergency Management, Bexar County, and the National Weather Service have developed a heat plan to increase public awareness and lessen health risks during periods of excessive heat.
The plan includes four levels of heat conditions.
- Level 4: Normal weather conditions.
- Level 3: A “Heat Outlook” alert goes into effect when the heat index is 90ºF — 108ºF for two consecutive days.
- Level 2: A “Heat Advisory” alert is when the daytime heat index is greater than 108ºF.
- Level 1: An “Excessive Heat Warning” is issued when the heat index reaches 113ºF or higher.
Preventing heat-related injuries
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Using sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more.
- Check the UV index to gauge how much sunscreen to apply. Pro tip: If the UV Index reads higher than three, take precaution going outside and wear sunscreen as well as sunglasses.
- Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration.
- This is going to hurt. Decreasing your consumption of caffeine (and alcohol).
Where to stay cool
The city has put together an interactive map of all things cool. Think pools, cooling centers, libraries, and community centers.
