Don’t you just love San Antonio in the fall?

Maybe I’ve seen “You’ve Got Mail” too many times, but September always makes me want to visit a locally owned indie bookstore and buy a man with a golden retriever a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils.

I like to channel my inner Meg Ryan at one of my favorite spots, located at the former Pearl Brewery on the Museum Reach of the River Walk: The Twig Book Shop. Not only is the interior a dead ringer for the Shop Around the Corner, but it sells children’s books as well as award-winning classics and works for adults. This hip local venue also hosts local and national poets and authors for events and readings, so go buy some books.

Pro tip: If you join a participating book club — or register your own — members can get 15% off all book club picks.

Today is Labor Day, and a host of activities await. Join the last day of the city’s festivities downtown with live music and food vendors all day at Historic Market Square, stop by Kolsch Fest at Kunstler Brewing and have a brewski, or soak up some rays and celebrate the last day of Summerbration at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

Mansion Monday

Will you accept this house? This newly listed home in the prestigious Cross Mountain area is the spitting image of “The Bachelor” mansion. European-style architecture sits within rolling hills just off Scenic Loop Road, with an outdoor living area befitting a vacation retreat.

Sports

Peaceful Sundays were fun while they lasted, but now it’s time for the NFL to return this Thursday, Sept. 4. The reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles are hosting their division rival Dallas Cowboys to start the season in front of a typically raucous crowd. Catch the games on Hulu.

How much do you think the most expensive single-family home listing in the United States is? If you guessed $300 million, congratulations. This recent listing in Aspen, Colorado sits on 74+ acres and boasts 27,000+ sqft within the idyllic, scarcely believable beauty of the Rocky Mountains. We’ll start a GoFundMe.

Handsome Dan and Jack the Bulldog. No, those aren’t frat boy nicknames. College football is back, and it’s time to meet the 12 beloved dogs who rep their schools across the US. Tune into the action for a chance to glimpse the four-legged cuties. (US News & World Report)

The Wrap

What other “You’ve Got Mail” moments could you recreate this fall?

Instead of the now-closed Cafe Lalo on New York’s Upper West Side, try Early Bird Coffee in the Huebner Oaks Shopping Center for a very similar aesthetic. And — instead of the 91st Street Garden in the movie — try staging your big romantic identity reveal at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.
