6 Texans will rep Team USA in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games

Sad the Olympics are over? Don’t worry, sports fans — amazing athletic feats are still to come in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, running tomorrow, Aug. 28 to Sunday, Sept. 8, that will feature 549 events across 22 sports.
Cheer on these six Texas athletes representing Team USA, including two athletes from the Alamo City.
Korban Best | Para Track and Field
The 21-year-old sprinter is from Southlake and played football for Carroll Senior High School before heading to Arizona State University. He will compete in the 100 Men’s T-47 and Universal 4x100 relay, starting Friday, Aug. 30.
Marco De La Rosa | Para Shooting
This athlete calls Chicago home but he currently lives in San Antonio and will be participating in the Pistol Shooting competition at the Paralympics. The event’s kick off is on Sunday, Sept. 1.
Fabian Romo | Wheelchair Basketball
The Houstonian helped the UTA Movin’ Mavs take home a national championship in 2017 before going on to play professional wheelchair basketball in Spain. Catch him with the rest of the Team USA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team as they take on Spain on Thursday, Aug. 29.
Korban Best is speeding toward the 2024 Paralympic Games.
Jordan White| Para Archery
From Cedar Park, White is the youngest US archer to qualify for the Paralympics at just 15 years old. Competitions begin Thursday, Aug. 29.
Kelly Elmlinger| Paratriathalon
The two-time Paralympian is originally from Ohio but considers San Antonio her hometown. She also served 10 years as a US Army medic. Catch Elmlinger competing starting Sunday, Sept. 1.
Lizzi Smith | Para Swimming
Originally from Indiana, Smith trains and coaches at Western Hills Athletic Club in Austin. The 28-year-old swimmer will compete starting Thursday, Aug. 29.

🚦 How you can help improve our city’s public transit

To keep things moving, VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority has introduced a new Advanced Rapid Transit service route to connect the area near Our Lady of the Lake University on the west side, through downtown + to the Frost Bank Center on the east side.

We all have our opinions — good or bad — about traffic. To involve San Antonians in this project, VIA Metropolitan Transit is hosting a series of public meetings to get feedback on how to improve services for existing + future riders.
The San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association and the City of San Antonio reached an agreement that would give firefighters a 20% raise over three years. The contract needs to be ratified by union members and voted on by City Council to be approved. (TPR)

Texas A&M San Antonio is opening a new Rec Center tomorrow, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. Visitors can expect tours, volleyball, a basketball tournament, yoga classes, fitness challenges + a barbecue. This is part of the university’s 2020 Master Plan.
Theater
“All Things Equal” — a play about the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — is coming to the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre. Get your tickets for this two-night show on Tuesday, Sept. 10 + Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Travel
The San Marcos Premium Outlets is expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging access. The $300,000 project begins on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and is estimated to be completed on Friday, Nov. 29. Get the 411 on EV charging in SATX.
