The yearly Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice returns on Saturday, March 23. The two-mile trek will start at the intersection of Guadalupe + S. Brazos Streets and end at Hemisfair’s Civic Park. We’re here to remind San Antonians why we march with a crash course about this annual event, along with key info on how to participate + what to expect.
The backstory
San Antonio has marched in honor of Cesar E. Chavez since 1997. Chavez was a civil rights leader who fought for migrant farm workers’ rights, better working conditions, and higher pay.
In 1979, Cesar Chavez made a visit to San Antonio to meet with the Mexican American Unity Council to join the United Farm Workers and their call for a boycott of Chiquita Bananas due to low wages.
Over the years, the march has gained momentum and in 2011 the San Antonio City Council voted to change the street name of Durango to Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.

The President of the Fiesta San Antonio Commission, Richard Sparr, announced Fiesta Fiesta, the kick-off event to the 11-day celebration, will have a new venue this go around. Plan ahead to celebrate at the Alamodome next to the Fiesta Carnival on Thursday, April 18, 4-11 p.m. (KENS 5)
Legacy
Local fashion and beauty stylist Erika Guerrero has died at the age of 32. There will be a rosary at Porter Loring Mortuary West at 7 p.m. this Sunday, March 24. Those attending are requested to not wear black, but vintage attire in her honor.
Civic
The Historic Design and Review Commission denied developers plans to demolish the historic Rich Book building at 900 W. Houston St. and the neighboring office building at 908 W. Houston St. The real estate operators have been seeking permission to demolish since 2021. (SA Business Journal)

Bourbon Street Seafood and Kitchen plans to open its fourth location on the city’s far northwest side near the Dominion neighborhood. According to a filing, the new $2.4 million construction will include indoor + outdoor dining areas, a bar, and a covered patio. Construction is expected to be completed April 2025.

Bakery Lorraine is accepting pre-orders for its macaron-topped carrot cake until Thursday, March 28. The seven-inch cake has pineapple, coconut, walnuts, and layered with cream cheese frosting — costs $80 and serves 10-12 people. Customers have the option for a Saturday, March 30 or Sunday, March 31 pick up slot.
