Howdy, San Antonio.
We’re now just a couple of days away from the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. While all the action officially starts on Thursday, Feb. 8, we want to give our readers — whether it’s your first time or your tenth — a heads up on what to expect.
What’s the Rodeo?
The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo is a month-long western celebration complete with 19 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association performances that are certain to entertain the whole family. Think: Bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, and bull riding.
The events are formatted tournament-style with contestants competing each night for the opportunity to be crowned the San Antonio Rodeo Champion.
More than a stock show
Good news — If the stock show is not your thing (we won’t blame you, those barns are not the friendliest on the nose), there’s still plenty for you to enjoy. Stop by the fairgrounds for your pick of classic carnival games + fair food.
You can also pay a visit to hundreds of vendors at the expo hall — how many flannels are too many flannels? Pro tip: Check out the map to pique your curiosity before even stepping foot inside.
Enjoy live performances, carnival rides + eats, shopping, and scholarship presentations.

San Antonio Zoo discovers time capsule from 1993

The time has finally arrived. Back in January, while construction was moving along on the San Antonio Zoo’s savanna habitat expansion project, workers dug up a container labeled “1993.” Comments on its Facebook took turns guessing what could be inside: Old photos, maps, pamphlets, or newspaper clippings. One user even commented: “Ohh okay. I guess I’m officially older then a time capsule now.” Oof.
Grab those archaeology gloves and pause your guesses because we’re here to tell you what’s actually inside. The contents of the time capsule include memorabilia from each zoo department at the time such as
These cowgirl boot stir sticks from Coco Cadeaux’s collection. They’re festive, pink, and perfect for your Galentine’s Day celebration (bonus: they’re also BPA free).

I was absolutely geeking out when the zoo opened its time capsule. What would I put in a time capsule? Glad you asked. A cascaron would be a fun addition — with the 2024 date on it of course.
