With San Antonio constantly growing and undertaking multiple high-profile developments this year, we figured it was time to talk about the cost of planting some roots in the Alamo City.

💵 Breaking down the numbers

Hypothetically speaking, if you live in a household that brings in $50,000 annually — according to experts — you shouldn’t spend more than 30% of your monthly gross income on rent. Don’t worry, we did the math for you — your max monthly rent budget would be $1,250. The average monthly rent for an apartment in San Antonio is $1,304 — putting you over budget.

According to a recent study by Attom Data Solutions, it’s actually more affordable to buy a home in Bexar County than to rent.

The Alamo City also has entities such as the San Antonio Housing Authority + other government-funded programs to help develop more affordable units.

The San Antonio City Council awarded local solar company, Big Sun Solar, a $30 million contract to install roof top, parking, and park canopy solar photovoltaic systems at 42 city facilities. The new agreement will move the city closer to its 2040 goal of zero net energy for all municipal buildings.

The benefits

In addition to the energy-saving costs these are the other pro’s of this partnership:
  • The project is expected to offset an estimated 11% of the City’s electricity usage.
  • 23 installations will be parking canopies powering on-site operations and provide shade + hail protection.
  • Creation of more than 15 full-time jobs.
To further boost San Antonio’s economy, Big Sun Solar is partnering with the St. Phillip’s College Solar Apprenticeship Program to give students on-the-job training, creating a pipeline of post-graduate careers.

From the editor
It has been a busy week over here, and I’ve had a couple of San Antonio firsts. I saw my first musical at the Majestic Theatre, ANNIE, and I was able to attend Cirque du Soleil’s “BAZZAR.” Each event was amazing, and I highly recommend you see them before they leave.
