San Antonio maintains perfect Municipal Equality Index score for 3 years

Every year, the Human Rights Campaign releases a Municipal Equality Index which dives into municipal laws, policies, and services to score the city’s inclusivity of LGBTQ+ people. Here’s how we did over the last three years:
Let’s break down how we got here… and how that score may change.

Non-discrimination laws

This category awards up to 30 points based on whether LGBTQ+ discrimination is prohibited by law in areas of employment, housing, and public accommodation.
  • 2020 score: 20
  • 2021 score: 30
  • 2022 score: 30

Municipality as employer

Cities as employers can achieve up to 28 points by meeting certain guidelines for ensuring an inclusive workplace and benefits. We’ve kept a perfect score from 2020 to 2023.

Services and programs

This section has 12 available points for the city’s efforts to include LGBTQ+ communities in services and programs.

And we’ve scored five out of 12 for the past three years.

Law enforcement

This section has 22 available points and looks at the relationship between law enforcement and the LGBTQ+ community. We’ve kept 22 out of 22 points from 2020 to 2023.

Leadership on LGBTQ+ equality

This section has eight available points and looks at city leadership’s commitment to advocacy and inclusion. We’ve kept all eight for the last three years.

Looking ahead

The past three years suggest that our city’s equality score is trending upwards, and could go higher as our current score relies on flex points.

SATXtoday: Port Royal
James Beard Award nominee, Nicola Blaque’s newest concept Port Royal is slated to open summer 2024 | Photo by Hemisfair
Calling all Jerk Shack and Mi Roti fans. James Beard Award nominee, Nicola Blaque — who is also the owner and chef of those Caribbean restaurants — is working on a new concept at Hemisfair, in the historic Schultze House.

The City of San Antonio Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC) approved the design for her new venture, Port Royal, yesterday. The Schultze House is a 1,750-sqft home in the middle of Yanaguana Garden, the Peggy Mays Garden, and Civic Park.

Here’s what we know:
  • The menu will feature flavors of the original Jerk Shack along with new elevated dishes
  • Full bar and cocktail program on the first floor
  • Two floors of dining with balcony seating and an adjacent patio in a garden
  • Construction is slated for this fall and the projected opening is set for the summer of 2024

Last we we asked you this question, and y’all donut mess around when it comes to these treats. 35% prefer glazed donuts, while 27% voted for cake donuts, and 19% for jelly filled. However, 67% of you only buy donuts once a month (and we were shocked that 22% never buy donuts at all).

From the editor
Last night, my family and I went to Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery for dinner. My aunt and uncle (my mom’s little brother) are in town on business and we were able to spend some time together at the Historic Pearl. My mom and her brother grew up in San Antonio in the 70s and they talked about what the Pearl used to look like back in the day.

I suggested we go to Southerleigh because they updated their menu late last year and I have yet to try it. I highly recommend trying out the Southerleigh famous fried chicken, steak frites, or the scallops + ham risotto.
