Road trip idea: Grab your friends and go fall foliage hunting this month. | Photo by @ivanbriones_photos
South Texas might not be the paragon of autumnal foliage, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find some unbe-leaf-able views in and around our beautiful Alamo City.
Here are a few of our favorite fall spots to visit around the 210 that are sure to make it to the ‘gram.
Location: 7735 Mockingbird Ln., San Antonio, TX Distance from downtown: 9.7 miles
You can find a monument hand-built in Gwangju, Korea — one of San Antonio’s sister cities — by Korean craftsmen and artists who traveled to San Antonio to assemble it.
Location: 16710 Ranch Rd. 965, Fredericksburg, TX Distance from downtown: 87.7 miles
There’s more at Enchanted Rock than just the dome. Hike, backpack, camp, rock climb, geocache, or even stargaze while surrounded by gorgeous autumnal scenes.
Location: 234 RR 1050, Concan, TX Distance from downtown: 92.7 miles
During the fall, you can expect plenty of visitors looking to take in the natural beauty. Overnight visitors can stay in screened shelters, cabins, or campsites.
Location: 3350 Park Road 31, Spring Branch, TX Distance from downtown: 35.2 miles
With four miles of river frontage, the tree-lined Guadalupe River provides an excellent backdrop for those looking to get a unique hiking adventure near the Alamo City.
Location: 37221 RM 187, Vanderpool, TX Distance from downtown: 92.8 miles
The spectacular fall views are well worth the drive. You can follow the park’s fall foliage report online, which is updated periodically.
Pro tip: Don’t forget to reserve your stay (or visit) prior to arriving. While the name “park” may be misleading, you’ll want to be sure that you’ve secured a day pass (and not get turned away at the gate like City Editor Iván did in 2019) before heading out.

ASKED
Settling the great SATX debate 💬
Answered: How do you pronounce our name?
We’ve got a pressing debate that needs your help resolving. | Graphic by SATXtoday team
Up until our one-year anniversary, we were burdened by an unresolved debate with our fellow 6AM City editors: How do you pronounce SATXtoday?
You can read all about our internal opinions on the matter. However, we ultimately left the final decision to you.
Drumroll, please — Here’s what y’all had to say.
On our newsletter survey, the results show:
84% of our readers pronounce each letter like “S-A-T-X”
10% of our readers group SA + TX, pronouncing it “Say-Tex”
5% of our readers group SA + TX, but pronounce it “S-A-Texas”
Only one person pronounces it “Sat-Ex” (if you’re reading this, hi there 👋)
Well, there you have it. The vast majority of our readership agrees that it should be S-A-T-X. But, of course, we won’t judge if you think otherwise.
And now, the great SATX debate is finally settled — that is, until we ask if you’ve changed your mind next year.
Editor’s pick: If you’re like me, you want to get the most bang for your buck. Planning a one-to-two-hour autumn getaway can be quite the commitment, so be sure to check out the 2022 Fall Foliage Map to know when to pack the camera and bust out the flannel.
