Local libations: A round of San Antonio-centric craft beers

A turn of phrase here, a recognizable San Antonio nod there — these craft beers found around the Alamo City take local pride seriously.

SATXtoday: Black Lab Brewing

Grab pint of locally brewed beer at Black Laboratory Brewing.

Craft beer is facing a dry spell. Sales were down 4% last year, and for the first time in 20 years, more breweries have closed than opened nationwide in the last 18 months.

Luckily, San Antonio makes a lot of great craft beer. Local brewers are constantly tapping their creative juices to drum up crafty collaborations, standout recipes, and fun names for their frothy masterpieces.

In celebration of the Alamo City’s brewery scene, we’re raising a glass to three San Antonio-centric beers.

Rodeo Tea | Black Laboratory Brewing

OK, so this is a seltzer — but we wrangled it up anyway. The name was inspired by the annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, which takes over the Frost Bank Center + Freeman Coliseum each February.

Style + flavor: According to the brewery, this seltzer “tastes just like sweet tea… but with a 5% ABV kick.”

Alright, Alright, Alright | Roadmap Brewing Co.

Ah, we can just hear it now: Matthew McConaughey’s iconic catchphrase as David Wooderson in the Texas-based flick, “Dazed and Confused.” With its groovy can art, this 1970s-style pilsner is a mood. Fun fact: This beer won gold at the 2022 Great American Beer Festival.

Style + flavor: This 4.5% ABV beer combines pilsner malt + lager yeast for a clean, crisp finish and “refreshing vibes for days.”

Come and Drink It | Back Unturned Brewing Co.

You’d better do what the name says. This beer’s moniker puts a boozy twist on the iconic slogan that originated during the Texas Revolution.
Style + flavor: Described as “light and easy to drink,” this 5% ABV Helles is made with German malt, yeast, and hops.

Cheers to you, Alamo City. This is a sampling of local craft brews with San Antonio-related nods to their names. If we missed your favorite, share it with us.
