The next time you want to crank up the air conditioner this summer, you might want to think twice. Energy conservation — especially in the middle of a Texas summer — not only helps your wallet and the environment, but helps to ensure grid reliability (read: enough supply to meet energy demands).

Fortunately, CPS Energy is here to help. As the nation’s largest community-owned utility, they have numerous resources including their color-coded Energy Conservation Levels, designed to help residents gauge what they can do to control + conserve energy.

Here’s what you should be doing for each color level this summer.

Green: Everyday Conservation

  • Set your thermostat to 78°, if it’s safe for you to do so
  • Unplug electronics when not in use
  • Close shades + blinds; turn off unnecessary lights
  • Run fans in occupied rooms
  • Try cooking on grills and drying clothes outside

Yellow: Peak Energy Demand

On top of Green measures, also try to:

  • Avoid using large appliances (think: washer, dryer, dishwasher + oven)
  • Charge electric vehicles at night
  • Adjust the thermostat to minimize HVAC use

If the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) declares grid reliability is at risk, an Orange or Red Alert will be issued. In this case, you should be prepared to do the following:

Orange: Energy Grid Reliability Risk

  • Have your household plan for power emergencies on hand
  • Limit power usage
  • Prepare for possible loss of power
  • Turn off pool pumps
  • Be ready to implement alternative ways to power medical devices

Red: Controlled Outages

  • Turn off and unplug all appliances, HVAC + lights
  • Keep refrigerator door closed to preserve the life of perishable food
  • Leave one light on to know when power is restored
