One tequila, two tequila, water (because we’re responsible). Today is National Tequila Day and we wanted to highlight a local spirits brand taking over the drink scene in the Alamo City.

Have you heard of Saint Maya Tequila? You’ve probably seen them at local bars like El Camino, Southtown 101, or Amor Eterno. This up-and-coming company is giving us the inside scoop (thanks to co-owner, Zack Ramirez) on who they are, what they’re bringing to San Antonio, and how you can grab a bottle.

How did Saint Maya Tequila get its start and why was the company created?

We’re a founding group of three (Zack Ramirez, Jay Torrez, and Jordan Simmons) who started the company two years ago. We didn’t have any experience in the spirits industry or even bar experience, we just really love tequila.

After looking at the market and realizing there wasn’t a brand out there that represented San Antonio, we decided to create it. It took a lot of research trips to Mexico and mistakes, but ultimately we were finally able to get a product on shelves.

What is Saint Maya’s mission and goals?

We really want to showcase the versatility of a premium tequila and how it is a truly great spirit that you can enjoy in a variety of ways. For our brand, we want to represent San Antonio in the best way possible and give people a taste of the city in a bottle.

What’s the company’s biggest accomplishment to date?

Just getting a product on shelves honestly. We hit quite a few roadblocks on the journey to even get our first production run made, so we’re super proud of the team for not giving up and figuring things out as we go. Now we’re in over 50+ locations throughout Texas.

What is your favorite drink to make with this product?

This drink is called Spice of the Saints and was created by the staff at St. Peter’s Cocktail Bar in Helotes, where you can find it today. The ingredients include:

  • 1.5 oz of Saint Maya Tequila
  • .5 oz of Amaretto
  • .5 oz of Allspice
  • 2 dashes of Whiskey Bitters
  • Pour all ingredients into a whiskey glass with an ice sphere. Stir until it’s done.

Where can people find your tequila?

You can find Saint Maya on shelves at a majority of liquor stores throughout San Antonio (Spec’s, Alamo City Liquors, and Total Wine to name a few). We’re also stocked in over 25 local bars + restaurants, and still expanding throughout the city as well as Texas.
