🚗 Before you buy: 5 things to check on your test drive

Shopping for a new car? Don’t rely on reviews or videos: The real test happens behind the wheel.

A thorough test drive helps you spot red flags, confirm comfort, and see if your next ride fits your lifestyle and your budget. Here’s how to make every minute count:

📍Plan your route

The dealership lot isn’t enough. Book at least 30 minutes on a mix of roads — highways, backstreets, and winding routes — to see how the car truly handles.

👀 Inspect inside and out

Before hitting the gas, test seat comfort, cargo space, and tech controls. Have kids? Bring their car seats to check the fit.

🔊 Listen up

Turn off the radio and focus on the engine, brakes, and handling. Comfort and confidence behind the wheel matter most.

📝 Do your homework first

Get pre-approved through your credit union to keep your budget in check and your leverage high. Pro tip: Bring a friend to help you avoid impulse decisions.

⏳ Take your time

Never feel pressured to buy on the spot. A second test drive is always an option.

Ready to roll? United Texas Credit Union can help with pre-approval + hassle-free auto loans.

Editor’s Pick

I am Ironman

80-year-old Natalie Grabow recently became the oldest woman to cross the finish line at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, doing so in just under the 17-hour time limit.

That got us thinking: How would we create a course comprising the feared 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycle, and 26.2-mile run in San Antonio?
  • Swim | We’d start the event at Medina Lake, where picturesque, tranquil waters provide the perfect backdrop for the swim.
  • Bike | We planned out a route on Google Maps for this one, starting where we left off at Medina Lake, heading north through multiple state parks, and then heading back to the Alamo City via Canyon Lake + New Braunfels.
  • Run | That ride lands us at Plaza de Armas, right by the start line for the upcoming inaugural San Antonio Marathon. So we’re just copying that route.
