I got called up onstage and had to stick my hand in an open flame, and it was magical — 10/10, no notes. | Photo via Donna Provencher, SATXtoday
A historic theater turned hidden speakeasy: What could be better?
The Woodlawn Comedy Club — operating out of the newly renovated and restored Woodlawn Theatre building on Fredericksburg Road — is a gorgeous gem in the heart of the Art Deco district.
Last Thursday night, my Slytherin dreams came true attending a “Defense Against the Dark Arts” magic show there, but the venue hosts so much more, from concerts to prominent comedy acts to improv performances to an upcoming Robin Williams tribute show. And with a giant theater that seats nearly 1,000 and full bar downstairs — coupled with a Prohibition-era speakeasy and more intimate performance space upstairs — you don’t want to sleep on this party.
Pro tip: There is so much going on at this venue at any given time, it’s hard to remember it all — be sure to visit their website and sign up for their newsletter to stay in the know.
