🍎 School’s (still) in session

We’ve got the dirt on how to start composting, plus the best bin for your needs.

First things first

What is it? Composting is the process of decomposing organic matter — like leaves, food scraps, and yard trimmings. As for the how, you’ll need to find a dry and shady spot in your backyard to build your compost pile.

Here are some compost containers we’ve bin eyeing:
  • For beginners | This bin is easy to clean and is perfect for collecting scraps on your counter.
  • For the serious gardener | This 43-gallon container rotates and has two chambers so you can add fresh waste while the older batch finishes up.
  • For the landscaper | If you plan to compost mostly yard waste, this open-top bin is a good alternative to a pile.
If you’re using the city’s curbside organics collection program, green carts are collected each week on the same day as blue recycling carts. These tips and tricks will help keep your cart clean.

News Notes

Traffic

Pump the brakes. Beginning Tuesday, May 27, the lower level main lanes on southbound I-35 from South Alamo Street to South Laredo Street will close. The closure will remain in place through mid-June as part of the I-35 and I-10 downtown repair project. (KSAT)

Biz

We’re closer to seeing an Amazon Prime Air Drone Delivery Center in East Side. The Zoning Commission approved a permit that would allow the build-out of a 9,400-sqft structure at SAT3. If it earns final approval, drones could fly within a 7.5-mile radius of facilities at 6806 Cal Turner Dr. (San Antonio Business Journal)

Development

The Zoning Commission also approved plans for a mixed-use housing development in Tobin Hill. The project calls for up to 575 apartments + some retail and office space along North St. Mary’s Street, East Euclid Avenue, and East Park Avenue. It could break ground in 2026. (San Antonio Business Journal)

Number

$9 billion. That’s the amount Port San Antonio generates each year, more than doubling its economic impact in the last decade, based on a recent report. That number is credited to development projects that support over 80 Port tenants. (San Antonio Report)

Eat

San Antonio’s Crepeccino Café & Crêperie is planning another location, this time in The Portico at Shaenfield development. Construction should begin in July and wrap in November. Nearby, Mexican-style seafood concept La Costa Grill is expanding to SATX with a location to open by January at Landmark North. (SA Current)

Watch

Earlier this week, we shared that San Pedro Creek Cultural Park is fully open after a nearly decade-long transformation. If you haven’t hit the pavement yet, this is your sign. Don’t let the steps stop there, either. We have a guide to 30 more green spaces.

Sports

There might be room for NIL in the college football playbook, but Kirby Smart is throwing a flag on the play with recent comments. Get the latest news, analysis, and insider information for the SEC with Locked On’s daily, team-focused podcasts.

Number

$4,000. That’s how much an ounce of gold is expected to cost in 2026. And since gold thrives in unstable markets, its rally appears far from over. Check out gold IRAs, which let you own physical gold while taking advantage of IRA tax breaks.*

The Wrap

Ah, the taste of summer. Nearly half (48%) of respondents to yesterday’s poll of preferred agua fresca flavors went with watermelon. As part of the only 8% who chose lime, I guess I’m a bit of an outlier. Though horchata, Jamaica (hibiscus), and pineapple weren’t far off at 12% each.
