As the city engages in its Large Area Rezoning projects (an article that’s currently a work-in-progress) in Districts 3, 5, and 2, we thought we’d give you the lowdown on all things ADUs. — think: A suite for your in-laws.
What’s an ADU?
An accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a secondary housing unit on a single-family residential lot that has a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. They can be detached structures (like a guest house, tiny home, or she shed), garage apartments, additions, basements, or internal apartments to the main house.
The City of San Antonio is encouraging its residents to build ADUs, and use them for renting out to others in order to combat the housing shortage.

An office tower to residential conversion project is moving forward in the Medical Center. The city’s Zoning Commission approved one of the two proposed towers for conversion. A construction timeline has not been released. (SA Business Journal)
Edu
On Tuesday, TAMUSA broke ground on its new softball stadium, competition track, and multipurpose field. The new athletic facilities will be used for the university’s men’s + women’s teams, and be available for public use. Construction is estimated to complete in early 2026.
Feel Good
Spurs player Harrison Barnes, alongside his wife Brittany Barnes, have donated $250,000 to the AlamoPROMISE tuition-free higher education program. The donation is benefiting students at St. Philip’s College.

Theory Coffee and Duke’s Dive is hosting a fundraiser this Saturday, Feb. 22 with 15% of proceeds supporting Northwood Elementary.
