Black Business Week returns to San Antonio

It’s time to celebrate your local businesses, San Antonio.

Thursday, Aug. 1 marks the first day of Black Business Week SA, a conference that uses classes, workshops, and panels to provide Black business owners a way to get some exposure, education, resources, and support for their biz.

The conference runs through Friday, August 9 at the Carver Community Cultural Center + The Aiden Hotel Riverwalk, with plenty of ways to get involved.

✍️ Events to check out

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony | Thursday, Aug. 1 | 6-10 p.m. | Jo Long Theater, Carver Community Cultural Center | $20-$60 | Kick off the week of events with an opening ceremony featuring the White House Initiative for Black Americans.

Casino Night | Saturday, Aug. 3 | 9 p.m.-1 a.m. | Aiden Hotel Riverwalk | Try your luck at various casino games, listen to live music, and enjoy appetizers + a full bar.

Dine and Discuss | Monday, Aug. 5 | 7-9 p.m. | Various locations | $50 | Choose from one of five restaurants for a meal, beverage, and dessert.

Business One on One Roadmaps | Wednesday, Aug. 7 | 9 a.m.-1 p.m. | Aiden Hotel Riverwalk | $50 | Block off an hour to receive face-to-face guidance about your business with an expert.

Money Solutions for your Business | Wednesday, Aug. 7 | 9 a.m.-2 p.m. | Carver Community Cultural Center | $50 | Learn about different money solutions — like grants, loans, and crypto — that can help grow your business.

BBWSA Workshops | Thursday, Aug. 8 | 8 a.m.-6 p.m. | Aiden Hotel Riverwalk | $0-$100 | Check out nine different workshops led by field experts that range from how to build a website to floral design.

Cause
  • Kerbey Lane All Day Cafe announced the community recipient of its Kerbey Kindness platform is the San Antonio-based TEXAS YES Project. A portion of proceeds from its monthly pancake specials will be donated to help provide local students the supplies + resources they need for their academic journey.
Number
  • 21 billion. That’s how many gallons of water was lost due to water main breaks + leaks last year in the Alamo City. Carlos Mendoza, San Antonio Water System distribution and collection operations manager, said 7,400 leaks were fixed in 2023. Learn how to report a leak. (SA Report)
Civic
  • The US Department of Energy awarded $1.2 million to San Antonio’s Office of Sustainability for three initiatives aimed at ultimately reducing transportation emissions through its Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant. See which local initiatives will receive funding.

  • High Street Wine will host VINOPALOOZA on Thursday, Aug. 1 from 7-10 p.m. The wine bar inside the Pearl will be pouring wines from iconic producers from around the world. Guests can enjoy discounted bottles, new food items, raffles, blind tastings, and more. Tickets start at $100.
Open
  • Ritchie’s Hot Chicken is now open at 11224 Huebner Rd. This Nashville hot chicken-styled restaurant is serving up dishes like the Richie Rick Fries (seasoned French fries with chicken, cheese sauce, slaw, pickles, and secret sauce) and the Rich Special featuring two chicken tenders on a bun with all the fixings.

  • Dog Daze of Summer returns to the San Antonio Botanical Garden through the end of August. Bring your furry friends from 8 a.m. to noon daily for a stroll around the gardens. Pro tip: Dogs are limited to three per human and all dogs must be leashed.

  • Bakery Lorraine has launched a new pastry passport where locals can earn a free six pack of macarons. To participate, pick up one of the passports at any San Antonio location. Qualifying pastry purchases will result in a stamp. Passports can be redeemed for macarons once they are full of stamps.
