Picture this: You just moved to San Antonio and you need some help with the practicalities of life (we can’t just sit back and drink margaritas all day, unfortunately). Well pull up a desk, because class is in session. Welcome to San Antonian 101, our lesson on all things San Antonio citizenship.

Driver’s licenses and vehicle registration

New residents in need of a Texas driver’s license will need to provide proof of legal status, a Social Security document, and two documents confirming your residential address.

To register your car in the state of Texas, you’ll need to bring proof of State car insurance, proof of your identity, a Vehicle Identification Number, and Odometer Verification form to any Bexar County tax office (such as the Tax Collector’s office at 233 N. Pecos La Trinidad).

Initial registrations may be subject to a $50.75 fee.

You can make an appointment online to obtain a State driver’s license. Registration for your vehicle is conducted on a walk-in basis.

Healthcare

Establishing yourself with a primary care provider is one of those things you’ll be glad you did when you need one. Reach out to the professionals at the Gonzaba Medical Group, University Health System, or Central Med, to name a few. Pro tip: Websites like DocSpot filter physicians by location, patient reviews, insurance, language, and more.

Library card registration

If you think libraries are only for renting the occasional book, think again. Register for a library card at your nearest San Antonio branch.

To get your card, you’ll need proof of identity and proof of address. San Antonians of any age can apply for a free card to be used at any San Antonio branch.

Upcoming winter holidays and how to celebrate them in San Antonio

You’ve probably heard a lot of “happy holidays” around the Alamo City — with good reason. San Antonio has plenty of cultures that celebrate the start of astronomical winter, the end of the year, or just the coming of cold weather by gathering with loved ones and giving thanks.

Look forward to:
  • Yule (Thursday, Dec. 21), an ancient Germanic solstice festival. Celebrants mark the shortest day of the year and balance between light and dark.
  • Hanukkah (ongoing), the Jewish Festival of Lights which begins the evening of Thursday, Dec. 7 and ends on Friday, Dec. 15.
  • Kwanzaa (Tuesday, Dec. 26), a week of African American and pan-African celebration culminating in Karamu on Monday, Jan. 1.
  • Lunar Bodhi Day (Thursday, Jan. 18), celebrating the Buddha’s enlightenment through acts of kindness. “Secular” Bodhi Day was celebrated on Friday, Dec. 8.

Donna S. celebrates the feast of the seven fishes (an Italian tradition) on Christmas Eve and Christina L. makes tamales with the cousins.

I really enjoyed reading your holiday traditions. What’s my favorite holiday tradition? I’m glad you asked — every year my family and I wear matching pajamas. My mom wraps them, places the pajamas under the Christmas tree, and we unwrap them on Christmas Eve + try to act surprised.

We finally got my dad to participate a few years back. How’d we do that? We finally found matching pajamas that also made them for dogs.
