Digital Pro Lab will present its first photography exhibition featuring 12 local photographers and their perspectives of San Antonio on Saturday, Aug. 26. City Editor Nicholas sat down with curators, Alex James and Francisco Cortés, to talk about the project.
How did the “Unseen” project start?
Alex: Working at Digital Pro Lab I see thousands of images, and seeing every photographer that has come through here and what people are doing, I wanted to give them a shot at being heard. We had the goal of highlighting local photographers capturing moments in their communities, and what they experience — not a rose-colored filtered version.
Have you seen these “Unseen” murals pop over town?
Is the exhibition primarily film photographers or are there some who shoot on digital cameras as well?
Francisco: We have all kinds of photography, digital and analog. We even have an artist who shoots in medium format and Polaroids.
If you had to pick a favorite photograph in the gallery, which one would it be?
Francisco: I don’t think I have a favorite. I relate to more of what the story is about and if it’s identical to what I shoot and my style of photography.
What do you hope viewers will take away from this exhibit?
Alex: I think it’s the art I want people to get out of it. The goal was to give these artists a platform to share their personal experiences and stories — their “Unseen” San Antonio perspectives.

Announcing the best bathroom in San Antonio, according to our readers
The Hotel Emma bathroom suites are just divine. | Photo by Hotel Emma
We took matters into our own hands and asked our readers which San Antonio bathroom they thought should sit on the porcelain throne. It came down to the top three:
Hotel Emma. One of our Instagram followers called them the “chef’s kiss.” Across our readers and social media community, we are in agreement that this hotel bathroom is the best place to do your business.
Don’t believe us? Check out this video one of our followers, Stephanie A., giving us a quick lobby bathroom tour.
Congratulations, Hotel Emma. Your bathroom really is the crème de la commode.
Sony is announcing a new camera on Tuesday, Aug. 29 and I am going to tune in. My primary camera is a Sony A7rIII, I’m not saying I need an upgrade, merely just curious. The A7rIII is a tad bulky so I’m looking into a second shooter that I can grab-and-go with like the Sony a6700.
However, a good piece of advice I heard recently from Francisco Cortés was, “The best camera to have, is the one on you.”
