Created by local photographer Elias Perez and owners Joseph and Benjamin Ontiveros, Coffee on the Low is bringing the lowrider community to 1432 S. Saint Mary’s St on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Expect lattes, community, and a tapestry of beautiful vehicles. The event is free to attend. “Bring your family, friends, and an open heart. It’s all about community.” — Elias Perez.

Historical roots

Lowriding appeared in the 1940s during a time where Mexican-American communities faced continuous segregation and racism. Lowriding is a way to artistically express themselves and is also a key part of the Chicano civil rights movement.

In addition to being a creative outlet, today’s owners continue to pour their heart and soul into creating + maintaining their lowriders. San Antonian Hector Bazan converted his 1958 Chevy Impala to become a tribute to his late daughter — creating a mural of her on the trunk.

Stories like Hector’s are common in the lowrider community. These custom vehicles are often seen as mobile art displays, each with a unique story of its own. Coffee on the Low aims to create a space where locals + visitors alike can appreciate and learn more about the beauty of lowriders over great-tasting coffee.
