San Antonio’s bases are loaded — with a new downtown development, that is.
In a council meeting today, developers unveiled plans for a proposed shiny new baseball stadium + housing district. The future home of the San Antonio Missions is expected to be placed near Frost Tower and San Pedro Creek.
The plan is in very early stages, but let’s break down all the details we know about the proposed San Pedro Creek Park District.
Why a new stadium?
After purchasing the Missions baseball team in 2022, Designated Bidders have been instructed to bring the 30 year-old home of the Missions to MLB standards or build a new space.
The total capacity of the newly proposed stadium will be 7,500 — 1,300 more than Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium.
The ballpark project will include private projects in the surrounding area like a hospitality + multi-family developments, which will be constructed in four phases through 2031.
Residents currently living in the development zone will be offered compensation for moving.
Who is footing the bill?
The estimated cost of the new stadium is set to be $160 million. Funding for the project will not come from local taxpayers and instead will be a mix of bonds, private funding, team revenue, and a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone.
Bond funding will be repaid via an added $2 ticket fee + team revenue.
Community impact
The newly proposed stadium is projected to offer an array of public initiatives + amenities like:
- Public green space
- San Antonio Missions youth program which would feature free tickets to disadvantaged youth + youth programs
- SAISD internships
- An increase in hiring veterans
What happens to Nelson Wolff Stadium?
The City plans to redevelop the land and match the surrounding community’s needs. In the meantime, the San Antonio Missions will continue to play at its current home while they wait for their new one to be completed.
City officials estimate the new stadium will open in April 2028.
