If you’ve ever found yourself driving through downtown, you’ve probably noticed a giant, red-orange building that looks straight out of a science fiction movie — that’s Central Library.

The building opened in 1995 as part of the San Antonio Public Library system. This downtown gem is much more than just somewhere you can grab a book. Here are some fun facts you should know about Central Library:

  • OSS junior headquarters — ring any bells? Central Library was featured in the blockbuster sequel “Spy Kids 2: Island Of Lost Dreams,” as the building where spies could congregate and work on their top-secret missions.
  • The building was designed by famed Mexican architect Ricardo Legorettaprotégé of the great Mexican modernist Luis Barragán.
  • This 240,000-sqft, six-story structure contains 580,000+ volumes of literary works.
  • Serving as the centerpiece of the library is a two-story, glass-blown sculpture appropriately named “Fiesta Tower” created in 2003 by world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly commemorating the 100th anniversary of the SAPL system.
  • You can find various rotating art exhibits throughout the year on the library’s art gallery located at the 1st floor. Find out more about the library’s art collection by checking out the staff’s art guide.
