School’s out. Summer break begins today for many San Antonio schools, and students are heading home with their summer reading assignments.
We’re not letting adults off the hook, so here’s your unofficial summer reading list. Don’t worry, these are just suggestions + you won’t be quizzed.
“The Unbecoming of Margaret Wolf” by Isa Arsén
The South Texas author’s book follows actress Margaret Shoard who finds herself entangled with an eccentric director. Arsén’s novel captured the attention of San Antonians when she visited Nowhere Bookshop and spoke at the San Antonio Book Festival.
“The Women” by Kristin Hannah Check out this book following a 21-year-old who joins the Army Nurse Corps in 1965 to serve in the Vietnam War with her brother. The bestselling novel was the San Antonio Public Library’s most-rented book in 2024.
“Crying in H Mart” by Michelle Zauner
This memoir is recommended as a staff pick from the Twig Book Shop. Zauner’s story covers themes of family, loss, her Korean American identity, and using food to keep memories alive.

The Art of Tequila: History, Heritage, and Tasting | 6-8 p.m. | The Briscoe Western Art Museum | $50 | This 21+ event offers a spirited journey through the history of tequila, paired with a curated tasting featuring Mar Azul Tequila and small bites.

Music in the Park | 6-9 p.m. | Ruby City Sculpture Garden | Free | Get outside for a jazzy night of music — this week’s show features the Alex Coke and Carl Michel Sextet.

Saturday, May 31
KidsFest | 11 a.m.-3 p.m. | Traders Village | Free | The 8th annual gathering features interactive activities, arts and crafts + a community resource fair.
Bexar County commissioners advanced a $197 million proposal to renovate the Frost Bank Center + Freeman Coliseum area. The multi-use space would be used year-round and continue hosting the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The proposal and funding will be further discussed in June, including a potential visitor tax. Outdoors
San Antonio recorded 2.05 inches of rain yesterday, the highest rainfall total ever recorded on May 28. The city has seen over 4 inches of rain this week, helping with its rainfall deficit, but it’s not enough to end the ongoing drought. (San Antonio Express-News)
Environment
You know who likes all that rain — mosquitoes. Bexar County Public Works will begin its abatement efforts against the insect in June. The department also advises locals to check their properties for pooling water, as it tends to attract mosquitoes. (KENS5)
Coming Soon
Order up, Box Street Social will open its third location at the forthcoming The Portico at Shaenfield Ranch shopping center. The restaurant is known for its all-day brunch, dinner, and drink offerings. Its exact opening date hasn’t been announced, but the shopping center is expected to open this fall. (MySA)
Closed
Korean restaurant Cypress Cafe announced it has closed after more than two decades in business and just one year after relocating to Lombrano Food Hall. The restaurant shared that the closure is indefinite on social media, but expressed aspirations to return to business. (CultureMap San Antonio)
Stat
29.6%. That’s how many San Antonio home listings received price cuts last month, according to Zillow data. Experts view the number of reductions as a sign of the market stabilizing, and buyers are getting more power in the transaction process.
Ranked
Home sweet San Antonio. The city ranked No. 8 on ConsumerAffairs’ list of US cities with the most new homes. The study assessed the number of building permits issued + new home sales, and growth in the Alamo City was attributed to its below-average median home price.
