There are just a few celebrations throughout the year that have unquestionably become staple holidays for San Antonians — like Fiesta, and Día de los Muertos.

Also known as Day of the Dead, this holiday is celebrated in remembrance of the departed not only in Mexico, but in many parts of South America as well.

The Alamo City is no exception, and is gearing up for one of the largest celebrations yet.

Altares + Exhibitions

  • Altares y Ofrendas | Saturday, Nov. 2-Thursday, Nov. 7 | 12-6 p.m. | Centro Cultural Aztlan | Free | View altars celebrating loved ones who have passed on featuring marigolds, photographs, food, and other offerings.
  • Día de los Muertos Procession and Catrin & Catrina Contest | Saturday, Nov. 2 | 5-9 p.m. | Historic Pearl | Free | Visit the annual community altar created by local artists and participate in a costume contest while listening to live music.

News Notes

Transit
  • VIA is bringing its 10th transit center to the city’s east side at 4211 E. Houston St. Construction on the aptly-named East Side Transit Center begins next month and is expected to open in 2026. (SA Report)
Cause
  • The Bexar Branches Alliance and the City of Leon Valley are partnering to plant 225 trees along the Huebner Creek Greenway Trail. If you’re interested in helping, the organization is meeting to plant today from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 5601 El Verde Rd.
Eat
  • Laika Cheesecakes & Espresso will donate all revenue made on Sunday, Oct. 20 from its three locations to Feeding America to help the victims of Hurricane Helena and Milton. Find a location near you.
Closing
  • International Paper is closing its San Antonio Sheet Plant and laying off 89 employees. The closure comes after the company completed a strategic assessment and made the decision to cut operations. The plant will fully close on Monday, Nov. 18. (KENS 5)
