To read or not to read

Our favorite spots to read a book in San Antonio

Today is World Mental Health Day, and at SATXtoday one of our favorite self care activities is catching up with a good book. Of course you can sit inside your home and read, but it may be even nicer to take the reading outside.

Here are five places around the Alamo City that are perfect for digging into that new novel.

Museum Reach Amphitheater, 303 Pearl Pkwy.
Nestled along the Museum Reach portion of the River Walk is this shaded area with plenty of seating. You can easily spend a few hours reading with water fountains, restrooms, and restaurants at the ready nearby.

RIM Commons Park, 17635 La Cantera Pkwy.
Find a table under an umbrella and enjoy the palm tree ambiance. For extra sweetness, grab a scoop of ice cream from Lick Honest Ice Cream.

Chris Park, 111 Camp St.
This park opened in 2005 to celebrate the life of Christopher Goldsbury, the son of late philanthropist and artist Linda Pace. This park boasts lush foliage, inviting walkways, and encounters with art.

Confluence Park, 310 W Mitchell St.
A cornerstone for environmental education spearheaded by the San Antonio River Foundation, this park offers visitors the opportunity to connect with nature. Plus, the rushing water is the perfect soundscape to finish a chapter or two.

Elmendorf Lake Park, 235 Shore Dr.
This quaint park near Our Lady of the Lake University is a neighborhood oasis with plenty to do. Watch as the fishermen come and go as you wind down with your favorite book.

What are some of your favorite spots to read in San Antonio? Send us a message — we’d love to visit.

    The story of Landa Library

    LandaLibrary2Aerial.jpg
Landa Library may be a little hidden, but once you visit this local gem, you’ll never want to leave.  | Photo by the City of San Antonio
City Editor Nicholas here. I first stumbled upon Landa Library completely by accident. Confounded by its beauty, I knew I had to learn more. Come along as we learn about one of San Antonio’s hidden gems, and why I consider it to be a great place to read a book.

    The prologue

The library began as the home of Harry and Hannah Landa, who lived here from 1929 to 1946. While their house was under construction, the Landas traveled across Europe. They collected works of art and furniture that would be brought back to furnish 233 Bushnell Ave.

    A gift from heartache

Hannah Mansfeld Landa died on Oct. 28, 1942. Later in 1946, Harry Landa donated the residence to the City of San Antonio to be used as a library + children’s playground in honor of his late wife.

One of my favorite activities for fitness and mental health is doing daily yoga stretches. If you’re in the same boat, I highly recommend taking a look at our City Guide.
