Big Tex. Fried foods. A lineup of Texas music artists. All this can only mean one thing: The State Fair of Texas is back.
The first state fair was proposed in 1886, and because local leaders couldn’t decide where the event should take place, there were two fairs. The two sides eventually came together in 1887 and by 1916, the annual event welcomed one million people for the first time.
We’re giving you the rundown of what’s happening this year at Fair Park in Dallas. Ride with us.
Hours, tickets, and parking
The fair opened on Friday and will run until Sunday, Oct. 20. The gates open at 9 a.m.
Tickets + parking passes are available online. Admission costs $5-$25.
Parking is available on site — it’s $30 at official fair lots. Check out directions to get to the gates.
Pro tip: If you arrive after 5 p.m., all guests will pay the price of a child’s ticket.

Learn more about the program and how you can become one of the pre-approved city artists. | Photo by City of San Antonio
Ever wonder how artists are chosen for city projects? Well the secret is out, the Department of Arts and Culture is hosting an open call for its prequalified public art list.
This roster boasts a list visual artists + support service providers who are pre-approved by our City Council for potential designing, building, maintaining, and promoting future public art projects.
The program is moving from an annual application to a biennial process — the next application opportunity will happen in 2026. Once approved, selected artists will remain eligible for projects for six years. The goal is to express the vibrancy + diversity of the Alamo City through art, varying in scope and include two-dimensional, three-dimensional, functional and other commissions.

Our Texas markets already visited the fair during opening weekend.
