In a world of Hollywood multiverse storylines — we’re looking at you, Marvel — there’s a new alternate universe brewing, and it’s taking place in San Antonio.
The Down Market is showcasing an alternate reality version of the Alamo City through diverse voices, backgrounds, and innovation via the manga medium — a widely popular style of graphic novels originally published in Japan.
Meet The Down Market
The Down Market is a creative agency based in San Antonio and has recently dipped its toe in the world of manga.
Meet the characters of “The Down Market: Manga” in its first-ever issue: Landon Blue, Serafina Montoya, Fahim Adebayo, and Liora “Li” Kent.

It plans to infuse the style of Japanese comic books with San Antonio’s vibrant culture through a cover series.
Each week, The Down Market will post different manga covers showcasing various scenes of the Alamo City and it’s unique characters. The covers will have its own short story that tells the tale of a futuristic San Antonio.
Cyberpunk San Antonio
“The Down Market: Manga” has four characters, all with different Texas + cultural backgrounds.
Taking place in a not-so-distant future, the 210 has been transformed by becoming an energy production hub. The world is filled with neon highways, laboratory districts, and the River Walk has seen a glow up, becoming a floating market + entertainment hub.
Meet the real San Antonians who inspired the four characters in “The Down Market: Manga.”

At the helm is Founder + Creative Director Ja’el Sundown, who brings his childhood dream of creating comics to life with the new series.
It’s one thing to read a comic, but it’s another to experience it. We’re not talking MCU-budget blockbuster, but by putting the power in the palm of your hand.
Attendees of the upcoming Creative Mass can use their smartphones and scan codes to create various scenes from the comic covers.
Expect to see a character accidentally dropping a burger combo from the top of Frost Tower, and other virtual surprises.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg appointed Cristian Sanchez, Victoria Echeverri, and Jamie Zapata to the City’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board. The newly created committee informs city council members about issues affecting the quality of life of San Antonio’s LGBTQ+ community.
Announced
After a $3 million gift from philanthropist Susan Naylor, the San Antonio Zoo’s expanded savanna habitat will be called the Naylor Savanna. The new addition will double the space for rhinos and giraffes. The grand opening is happening on Friday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m.
Real Estate
University Health purchased an office building on the city’s northeast side for $28 million. The acquisition creates space at its South Texas Medical Center campus as it pursues expansion plans. (SA Business Journal)
Outdoors
Mitchell’s Landing, a pirate-themed playground, is hosting a grand opening party on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 10 a.m at Classen-Steubing Ranch Park. The play area honors the life of Mitchell Chang, who died at three years old in 2018.
Arts
A new art exhibition is on display throughout eight downtown hotels. “The Fiesta Patrias” showcases Mexican American civil rights activists through pop culture superhero art. The artworks are by local artist Ray Scarborough and are on view through Sunday, Oct. 13.

Stranded Coffee Club is opening its first brick and mortar location at 716 S. Alamo later this year. The coffee trailer took to Instagram announcing the news and shared images of the future space. Stay tuned for grand opening details.

Movie Mondays and Harvest Night Markets to return to the Historic Pearl

With Hispanic Heritage Month underway in the Alamo City, we continue to look for any reason to get out of the house as the weather cools down. The Historic Pearl’s Mercadito Cultural Market has become an annual staple in the community, but the fun doesn’t end there.
Starting in October the shopping experience will turn into Harvest Night Markets, and in December the Pearl plans to host holiday-themed shopping events.
