San Antonio is in the thick of summer. As we anxiously wait for the fall, we’re here to herb your enthusiasm with a roundup of community gardens to cultivate your green thumb.
Whether you’re looking to work with a group + share the fruit or solo grow your harvest, these local spots are tilled and ready to turnip the growing season.
This nonprofit was founded in 2015 to address health disparities in a high-crime corridor on the near eastside of San Antonio. Gardopia offers several programs including garden-based learning, a garden volunteer program, and a seasonal farmers market. Don’t miss: Check out the free Family Garden Day on Saturday, Aug. 10.
The garden is managed by William R. Sinkin Eco Centro at San Antonio College and aims to create opportunities for community volunteerism, fresh produce, and education. This 4.1-acre farm is one of the only housing authority, community, and higher education-led urban farming + food production initiatives in the nation.
Take a look at Garcia Street Urban Farm’s events calendar and register for its upcoming Gardening Basics class on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m.
Founded in 2008, the Beacon Hill Neighborhood Association created this community garden using grant funds from the Green Spaces Alliance. The garden is a setting for neighborhood recreation, social gatherings, and education. Pro tip:Email the garden about volunteer opportunities.
The Palo Alto Community Garden opened in October 2019 as a space to grow food, combat poverty, and address obesity in a historically under-served Southside community.

Help local teachers stock their classrooms for the 2024-2025 school year
Help our local education heroes and checkout their classroom supply wishlists. | Photo by Lalo Garcia
With the 2024-2025 academic year right around the corner, teachers are stocking their classrooms with supplies to make sure students have the tools they need for success. Oftentimes, teachers use their personal finances to make it happen.
We want to show our support by helping local teachers clear their school supply wishlists. We asked our subscribers in last week’s newsletter to send us teacher wishlists.
Feeling generous? Check out these wishlists for the upcoming school year:
Thank you to all the educators who submitted wishlists during our call out. You blew last year’s responses out of the water. I hope y’all have a great school year.
