10 events celebrating Black History Month in San Antonio

February is Black History Month, a period of recognition for the contributions, triumphs, struggles, and history of Black Americans. In San Antonio, local organizations and community groups have several events lined up to commemorate the occasion — here are 10 that are taking place in the coming weeks.

Honoring Lincoln Elementary: Black Westside Voices | Westside Education & Training Center, 610 SW 41st St. | Tuesday, Feb. 13 | 3-5 p.m. | Spend the afternoon learning about the legacy of Lincoln Elementary School by listening to stories by teachers + community leaders.

African American Book Festival | Second Baptist Community Center, 3310 E. Commerce St. | Saturday, Feb. 24 | 12 - 5 p.m. | This fifth annual event was created to celebrate the power of Black literature, explain the importance of representation, and to encourage Black economics.
Black Restaurant Weeks | Multiple locations | Sunday, Feb. 25 - Sunday, March 3 | Have a slice of culture + celebrate the contributions of Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, and businesses throughout this week-long event. SA2020 announced its dissolution after 12 years of serving the San Antonio community. According to its website, the City of San Antonio defunded the program and is planning a new community visioning process. Operations will end Thursday, March 28, but its resources, research + stories are available for download through September 2024.

Trinity University is hosting a symposium called “Academic Freedom in an Era of Educational Intimidation” on Friday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The one-day event will include panel discussions over recent state legislation and its impact on the education community. Registration for the event is optional.

2M Smokehouse will add dinner service beginning Friday, Feb. 16. Customers can expect the same lunch menu with new items that have yet to be announced. Check out its new operating hours: Thursday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

San Antonio-based Quarter Moon Productions is casting a TV commercial and is looking to fill four roles of a Latin or biracial family of four: mom, dad, and two kids. The audition is today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and filming starts the second week of February.

The interactive art gallery near Travis Park, Hopscotch San Antonio, has added five new exhibits. Come check out a cosmic trampoline, 11,000 suspended color-changing lights, and a Wabi Sabi Series showcase by local artist Albert Gonzales. Swing by Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.

After retiring from football earlier this month, former UTSA quarterback Frank Harris announced he is the new Vice President of City Fans 210, a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) fundraising organization helping to financially support UTSA athletes, particularly football players. I’m really excited for Black History Month. It’s a great way for me to learn about my culture and San Antonio always has a ton of events going on. The city and its organizations provide residents many ways to learn about the contributions of Black San Antonians and their impacts on the city. Y’all don’t want to miss out.
