Starting Friday, Jan. 26 through Sunday, Feb. 4, San Antonians can see a mix of free and paid concerts by domestic + international musicians in the quadrennial Gurwitz International Piano Competition. From young adult prodigies to a concert by pop icon and Gurwitz 2024 Honorary Chair, Dionne Warwick, here’s what you need to know about this musical event.
🎹 About the competition
The Gurwitz International Piano Competition (formerly known as The San Antonio International Piano Competition) was founded in 1983 by Dr. Richard Ferguson, Ruth Jean Gurwitz, and a group of music lovers. The mission of the competition is to discover + highlight the next generation of pianists. Since then, the four-year annual event has seen contestants from across the world.
The musical contest showcases the piano abilities of 12 musicians from around the world who were selected by an international panel of instrumentalists. The performers have a chance at Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals as well as cash prizes.

SAISD temporarily closes all schools
San Antonio ISD temporarily closes all campuses

The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) announced it is closing all campuses until Monday, Jan. 22 to address repairs to issues relating to burst pipes and water boilers.
Here’s what we know.
What happened?
Due the frigid temperatures the Alamo City experienced this week, about 70% of the campuses across the district witnessed heating system failures, with anywhere from 20% to 100% of those buildings not being able to heat appropriately. As a result, the district has decided to temporarily close the schools.
During this time, SAISD plans to:
Make repairs
Perform quality control checks at all schools
Parent + student resources
While the campuses are closed, SAISD is excusing student absences. SAISD students who are in need of a lunch can pick up sack lunches today and Friday, Jan. 19, at campus locations from noon to 1:00 p.m. Students are not required to be present for the sack lunch pick up.
Sleep mist, a cozy sweatshirt, or tea from Six & Main’s homebody collection. That’s right, there’s a collection specifically devoted to staying comfy and cozy at home (count us in).
