How does our local government work? Where can I have a say? Who can I go to if I have a problem? What resources are available to me?
Class is in session, San Antonians. We’re teaching SATX GOV 101, where we break down different aspects of our local government to become engaged citizens that create healthier (and more effective) communities.
How does it work?
In short, the Mayor and City Council members develop policies and enact laws.
The City of San Antonio is divided into 10 districts.

Mayor
Ron Nirenberg | Mayor Nirenburg (former District 8 Councilmember) is serving his fourth term in office and is the city’s first mayor of Asian Pacific Islander descent. Since 2017, he has pursued policies to reduce poverty, improve public health, and overcome historical socioeconomic inequalities.
Incumbent Ron Nirenberg reelected as San Antonio’s Mayor during 2023 city general election.

Council District members
Dr. Sukh Kaur, District 1 | Councilmember Kaur was elected in June 2023 and is the first South Asian to serve on the City Council. Dr. Kaur advocates for minimizing infrastructure disruptions for neighborhoods + businesses, improving public safety, and supporting small businesses.
Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, District 2 | Councilmember McKee-Rodriguez has been serving this district since 2021. He is currently the Chair of the Municipal Court Advisory Committee. McKee-Rodriguez is the first openly-gay man elected to City Council in San Antonio, and is the first openly-gay Black man elected to any seat in Texas.

University Health has begun construction on the new Palo Alto Hospital on the city’s south side. The $475 million hospital will include a full-service facility, an emergency room for adults + children, labor and delivery, and a neonatal intensive care unit. The hospital is expected to open in 2027. (SA Business Journal)
Eat
Local food truck, EL CEVICHERO, is opening its first brick-and-mortar location near Brook City Base at 2603 SE Military Dr. Suite 106. The Mexican-seafood truck currently has three vehicles around the Alamo City and offers dishes including Tacos Gobernador, Aguachile Mango Havanero, and Quesitacos de Birria.
Sports
VIA Metropolitan Transit is offering discounted rides to the UTSA Football game against the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Rides from its Crossroads Park & Ride to the Alamodome are $1.30 each way and will run until one hour after the game.
Today is
World Mental Health Day. Since 1992, this day is meant to shine a light on mental health education, awareness, and advocacy worldwide. Check out the local resources Bexar County offers its residents.
Concert
Nashville-based music group Bluphoria is coming to the Alamo City as part of it’s 29 city tour. Come out to Sam’s Burger Joint (near the Pearl) on Thursday, Oct. 12 with doors opening at 7 p.m. and the show starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and range from $18.08 to $69.22. (SA Current)

Moon Valley Nurseries has opened its first location in San Antonio. The 5-acre nursery at 3550 N. Loop 1604 E. strives to grow the best trees and offers best practices + tips for landscape care. Stop by Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Plan Ahead
Attention Vanderpump Rules fans. Local night club, 1902, announced that former SUR busboy turned reality show star, DJ James Kennedy, will be spinning at the venue. Come out for the show on Saturday, Nov. 11, starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are now on sale starting at $35.
Where to get free solar eclipse glasses in San Antonio

This year, San Antonio is be in the direct path of this year’s annual solar eclipse on Saturday, Oct. 14 as the moon moves in front of the sun, creating a ring of fire. In order to view this event safely, viewers must have special glasses to protect your eyes — meaning your $200 Raybans will not work and could damage your eyes.
The San Antonio Library is gearing up for the annual showing by offering events where you can get a pair of free sun eclipse-approved glasses. Here are a few free events:
Get Eclipse Ready | Schaefer Library, 6322 US Hwy 87 East | Tuesday, Oct. 10 | 4–5 p.m. | Talk to subject matter experts about how to safely view the eclipses and enjoy hands-on activities.
Eclipse Craft Time | Memorial Library, 3222 Culebra Rd. | Tuesday, Oct. 10 | 6–7 p.m. | Come make your own sun clock and pick up a pair of glasses while supplies last.
Raise your hand if you’re loving the cooler temperature. It finally feels like fall, however, due the rain we had last week, my allergies have been all over the place and it’s been a struggle. At least I get to wear my sweaters now, right?
