Before we begin, let us set the tone for this story: Hey Siri, play “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire.

Now that we got the good vibes and funky grooves going, it’s time to ask, “Do you remember the 21st night of September?” We’re here to take a look back into Alamo City history to what was happening in various years on the 21st of September.

Sept. 21, 1904
The highest recorded temperature on this day was set with a sweltering 101°F. That is certainly not fall temperatures.

Sept. 21, 1925
On this day, San Antonio College opened its doors as the University Junior College with an enrollment of 200 students. It is the oldest public two-year college in Texas that’s still in operation.

Sept. 21, 1970
Touchdown. Monday Night Football debuts on the ABC network on KSAT 12 at 8:00 p.m. The game featured the New York Jets with quarterback Joe Namath vs. the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium.

Sept. 21, 1978
Felix Stehling opens the first Taco Cabana restaurant at the corner of San Pedro and Hildebrand Avenues. The restaurant is still there to this day.

Sept. 21, 2011
The Arena Football League (AFL) announced the move of the Tulsa Talons to San Antonio. The team would then become the San Antonio Talons. FYI: The AFL is making a come back to the Alamo City.

  • The University of Texas at San Antonio announced they will freeze undergraduate resident academic costs for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years. This includes tuition, mandatory fees, all academic-related general fees, and college course fees.
Biz
  • Marcus Baskerville, co-founder of Weathered Souls Brewing Company, is seeking new investors for the brewery. This comes after co-founder majority partner Mike Holt announced he wants to sell his stake in the company. With new partners, Baskerville hopes to redesign the brewery on West Ave. and expand its food menu. (SA Current)
Award
  • The U.S. Department of Education awarded IDEA Carver Academy the 2023 National Blue Ribbon Award for closing the gap in student learning based on results from the previous academic year. The public charter school is the only local school to be recognized, and is one of 29 awarded in Texas.
Festival
  • The Brackenridge Park Conservancy’s annual Parktoberfest returns Sunday, Sept. 24 at the Koehler and Cypress Pavilions from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy local breweries + craft beer samples, traditional German dishes with a Texas twist, live music, and local artists. The event is free and open to the public.

  • Louis Shanks Furniture will close its remaining San Antonio store. The Texas-based furniture store opened in Austin in 1945 and has been operating for four generations. Swing by the location at 11035 IH10 West near the Huebner Oak Shopping Center today for its going-out-of-business sale. (KSAT 12)

  • Calling all scary movie fans. The Stars & Stripes Drive-In Theatre will feature “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984) beginning Friday, Sept. 22 through Thursday, Sept. 28. Grab your tickets and make the short drive up to New Braunfels to watch this movie. See what other scary movie the drive-in is showing throughout October.

Learn about San Antonio’s community tool shed program

Do you have an upcoming weekend DIY project, or maybe your lawn mower gave out? Well, the city can help with that — for free. That’s right, the City of San Antonio has a community tool shed program that allows residents, businesses, and community groups to borrow tools at no cost. Let’s break down the details.

Residents and community members who are interested in borrowing tools must complete a Request and Release Form. Here’s a list of tools available to borrow:
  • Lawnmowers
  • Leaf Blowers
  • Loppers
  • Rakes
  • Shovels
  • Tree Pruners
  • Weed Eaters
Locals can save a trip to Home Depot or Lowe’s and check out these tools with advance notice, completed forms, and proper identification. Tools can be checked out on Thursday or Friday mornings and returned on Monday mornings.
