Local businesses are coming together to show support for the island of Maui after they experienced devastating wildfires last week. From thrift stores to restaurants, we rounded up five ways San Antonians can shop local and help support Maui.

The Thrift Thru, 2021 San Pedro Ave Suite #1

Through the end of the week, this local thrift store is raising funds for its Maui Fires Fundraiser. Proceeds from each sale will be donated to the Hawaii Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund that is providing resources for disaster response + recovery.

Wow Wow Lemonade, 14510 NW Military Highway, Suite 104

This drink spot is donating $1 from every cup of lemonade sold to Maui relief efforts until Thursday, Aug. 31.

Hokulani Shave Ice, 303 Pearl Pkwy

Swing by this shave ice truck at the Pearl Farmers Market on Saturday, Aug. 19 and Sunday, Aug. 20. The truck will donate 50% from each cup sale to those affected by the wildfires.

Aloha Kitchen, 1151 Harry Wurzbach Rd.

The family home of Rene’e Park, co-owner of Aloha Kitchen, was lost in the wildfires. The restaurant has started a GoFundMe to raise funds to rebuild.

Big Aloha’s Ali’i Cove, 1210 Pat Booker Rd. Suite H

The owner’s wife, Mel, has traveled to Maui to assist in relief efforts. The restaurant plans to have a fundraiser started when she gets back. Keep an eye on its Facebook page for updates.

While Austin may be known as Bat City, did you know that San Antonio has its own reputation with this fang-tastic creature?

Just 25 miles from the Alamo City, you can watch 15 million Mexican Freetail bats soar into the evening sky — making it the world’s largest-known bat colony.

Bracken Cave Preserve

Owned by Bat Conservation International (BCI), Bracken Cave Preserve is located near Natural Bridge Caverns and is open during the summer months as this is the time the bats become migratory.

If you can’t catch this year’s bat season at Bracken Cave, here are three other places to visit near San Antonio.
Happy viewing everyone.

One of my favorite video creators, Bright Sun Films, put out a new project detailing the history and sinking of the MS Explorer Cruise Ship, and it was a fantastic video essay. I highly recommend this channel if you’re in the need for captivating documentary content.
