San Antonio Spurs announce new naming rights partner

The 21-year partnership between AT&T + Spurs Sports and Entertainment has come to an end, with a new prospect officially purchasing the naming rights to the city’s Eastside arena. What started as the SBC Center became the AT&T Center, and has now switched monikers for the third time.

Frost Bank has entered the chat. That’s right, the 155-year old financial institution has formally purchased the naming rights to the stadium.

Welcome to the Frost Bank Center

The Spurs and Frost Bank are expanding the existing 50-year partnership with a new deal, giving the bank naming rights of the team’s home arena, starting in the 2023-2024 basketball season.

“We believe in San Antonio – it’s our hometown. We want this relationship with the Spurs to demonstrate our unwavering sense of pride for San Antonio’s rich history and its bright future,” said Frost Chairman and CEO Phil Green.

Along with the name change, the Frost Bank Center will undergo some major improvements, like the addition of the Frost Club, complete with a “Puro Meter” mural and a game-day interactive light show that changes with the volume of fan noise inside the stadium.

The agreement now heads to the NBA for approval and finalization. Upon approval, work will begin to change AT&T-branded signage including:
  • Road + highway names
  • Building marquees
  • New signage for the press backdrop
  • Center court jumbotron and court

Who is Frost Bank?

Founded in 1868, the Texas-based banking institution has been doing business throughout the state for nearly three centuries. Frost Bank isn’t necessarily new to the team — they helped the Spurs move to San Antonio in 1973; Frost became the Spurs first jersey patch sponsor in 2018; and the bank was a sponsor for the team’s 50th anniversary celebration.

In addition to the expanded partnership, the Spurs and Frost will grow its community impact platform with educational programs.

Stay tuned for more info.

While we’re on the topic of changing names... have you ever considered changing yours?

Subway is currently offering a lifetime of free subs to those who change their names to match the company. So we thought it’d be fun to brainstorm what we would change our names to for free local restaurant eats.

City Editor Nicholas

I would most likely change my name to Coffee and Culture. The morning omelet is so delicious that it alone would constitute my name change. Rosario’s is a runner up with its amazing house-made salsa.

City Editor Adriana

I think I would change my name to Southerleigh. The location at the Pearl is my favorite. I love the Streak Frites on the lunch + dinner menus, and if I could afford to order one of everything on the brunch menu I would.

Now it’s your turn. Tell us what local restaurant you would change your name to for a free lifetime of eats.
