Arena Football League is coming to San Antonio

AFL 2024 season

The Arena Football League (AFL) is returning after a four-year hiatus, and with it, new leadership, new investment, and new teams. And in even more exciting new, those 16 new teams were just announced — San Antonio is one of them.

What is the AFL?

The AFL is a pro football league founded in 1986. While it was largely successful in the 80s and 90s, it struggled financially in later years, finally declaring bankruptcy in 2019. It has been defunct since.

That is, until now. F1 Sports and Entertainment purchased the league last year. In February, the company announced it would bring the league back starting in April 2024 for a 10-game regular season, plus playoffs.

Arena football works a little differently from gridiron football (as seen in the NFL and NCAA.) For example:
  • 50-yard field vs. a 100-yard field
  • 20-man active roster vs. a 53-man roster
  • 9-ft goalpost with a 15-ft overhead bar vs. 8.5-ft goalpost with a 10-ft overhead bar
Other Texas cities chosen include Austin and Odessa.

What does this mean for San Antonio?

Well, it’s one more pro sports team to add to our growing roster. (We added the San Antonio Brahmas, San Antonio Gunslingers, Flying Chanclas, and San Antonio FC in the last eight years alone).

That said, it’s not our first rodeo with an AFL team. San Antonians might remember the Talons who played at the Alamodome from 2011-2014. It’s not clear where this new team will play or what the team name or mascot will be — that’s expected to be one of the later announcements from the AFL.

Expect the AFL to come back to the field starting in 2024. So what’s next? Major partnerships, jersey designs, and team mascots will be announced soon.

How to spend a perfect day in Austin

Hey y’all, it’s City Editors Adriana + Nicholas. Did you know we also have a newsletter over in Austin? Yup, our colleagues London and Figi work over at ATXtoday, an easy day or weekend trip for San Antonians.

We’re going to pass the mic to London, Figi and their ATXtoday readers to tell us how they’d spend a perfect day in the Capital City, so we can bookmark for your next trip. The floor is yours y’all.

Morning

London’s favorite local coffee shop is Radio Coffee & Beer, and Figi’s is Plaza Colombian Coffee Bar, but reader Elise B. also recommended checking out the lakefront at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters.

For your walk, our readers recommended the historic Mount Bonnell or the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, an adjustable 10-mile trail that stretches along Lady Bird Lake through downtown.

Afternoon

Spending a summer afternoon in Austin centers around one thing: cooling off. No visit to Austin is complete without a stop at Barton Springs Pool, which stays a cool 68-70º year-round.
See the perfect day

From the editor
And reset. It has been a crazy past couple of weeks and I am taking the weekend to just relax and hangout inside. I’m currently reading “Pineapple Street” and it’s one of those books from multiple perspectives. It’s unfolding like a drama and I can’t put it down.

Have a great weekend y’all.
