Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama is out for the remainder of summer league

Have y’all watched the San Antonio Spurs during the Summer League games in Las Vegas? The team has decided to sit Wemby for the remainder of the summer season. Victor Wembanyama played the first two games in Las Vegas (Friday, July 7 and Sunday, July 9) and totaled 27 minutes of game time.

Why is Wembanyama sitting out?

Long story short, the Spurs have seen everything they need to see from the 19-year old basketball star. After closely watching Wemby on the court, the team decided he needs time to reset and rest in preparation of training + conditioning camp that’ll start in October, followed by a regular season.

What is NBA Summer League?

NBA Summer League is an off-season basketball tournament where NBA teams come together to try out different summer rosters instead of their regular season lineups. This gives rookies, sophomores, and G League affiliate players a opportunity to show off their skills in uniform.

Wembanyama told ESPN that he plans to talk to Coach Pop about a plan for the remainder of the summer. Tune in tonight at 9:30 p.m. and watch the Spurs battle the Washington Wizards.

Development
  • The city’s putting finishing touches into place on Avenue B and North Alamo Street protected bike lanes. The improvements will allow cyclists to have safe and easy access along the route. This is part of the city’s Lower Broadway Corridor Project, slated to be fully completed by June 2024.
Environment
  • AirNow.gov is predicting moderate air quality levels in the San Antonio area this week due to Saharan dust in the atmosphere. This phenomenon happens when tropical waves + winds blow dust in the air and carry dust thousands of miles across the Atlantic. Groups with sensitive respiratory issues should reduce outdoor activity.

  • The Aztec Theatre announced its new terrace bar will open Friday, July 14. The hours are from 6 to 10 p.m. The bar is located on the building’s rooftop and will feature a chill atmosphere overlooking the Riverwalk. Guests must 21 or older to enter.

  • Are you Batman? The Bat Conservation International is looking for its next Science Writer. While the society is based out of Austin, the role is fully remote. We’re biased, but with the world’s largest bat colony in our backyard... we think this position should go to a San Antonian. Don’t you? Apply here.

  • The San Anto Cultural Arts & Conjunto Heritage Taller is offering free music classes for kids 10 to 18 years old. Lessons are available for the bajo sexto and accordian, with classes Mondays through Wednesdays. Instruments will be provided and classes start on July 24. Email with questions or to register.

  • Six Flags Fiesta Texas has started technical rehearsals for its new go-kart experience, Circuit Breaker Grand Prix. The track features all-electric karts as well as hairpin turns, tight corners, and obstacles to race through. You can find it at Fiesta Bay Boardwalk and will require an additional fee.

New rock ‘n’ roll bar coming to San Antonio

Heads up San Antonians, we have new bars heading our way and they’re coming from the minds of Aaron Peña of the award-winning Amor Eterno and Roger Herr of Bar Loretta.

Gimme Gimme is set to open in Southtown later this month. But wait, there’s more. A new wine spot called A Perfect Day, is also making a splash soon. The two will be located next to each other, inside the former Francis Bogside location.

As we wait for an official grand opening announcement, here’s what we know:

Go Speed Racer, Go. This past weekend I had the pleasure to take my sisters and boyfriend to TJH Superhero Comic Con and Car Show. I cannot tell you how geeked I was to see Speed Racer’s Mach 5 car. The film + anime is one of my favorites and was the catalyst that got me interested in learning about cars.

If only the jump-jacks were real.
