The Alamo City and the City that Never Sleeps might have more in common than you think, beginning with our love for parks.
We’re sharing a bit about two former San Antonians who contributed to the legacy of public parks in the Big Apple — Warrie Price andBetsy Barlow Rogers.

🌳 The Battery
The Battery Conservancy is the nonprofit organization founded in 1994 to revitalize New York’s birthplace park. The Conservancy is tasked with the design and maintenance of The Battery, a 25-acre public parkland on the southern tip of Manhattan. Warrie Price is the foundation’s founder and President.
As a student at the University of Texas - Austin, Warrie became close friends with her college roommate, Lynda Bird Johnson (daughter of then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson). Warrie visited New York City for the first time in the summer of 1963 on Marine 1 with Lynda, fell in love with the city, and the rest is history. Read more about their friendship.
Nearly 30 years later, the Battery Conservancy has pumped new life into The Battery, turning it into a tranquil public garden and outdoor oasis.

What’s next for Chef Nicola? 👀
Owner of The Jerk Shack and Mi Roti teases new downtown concept
Congratulations Chef Nicola — SATX is proud of you. | Photo by SATXtoday team
Potluck Hospitality recently celebrated Chef Nicola Blaque’s semifinalist status for the James Beard Awards “Best Chef: Texas” category at the Food Hall at Bottling Department.
Nicola — recognized by Eater for having the Best Fried Chicken in America in 2022, among other accolades — is San Antonio’s first Black woman and Caribbean-American to be nominated in the category
In addition to a spoken poem by Poet Laureate Andrea “Vocab’’ Sanderson, music by DJ Donnie Dee, and light bites from Mi Roti and Jerk Shack, Nicola shared a few remarks with those in attendance.
“To women that are working in this industry, [this nomination] says a lot. It says that your voice is being heard. Don’t give up. Keep fighting. And keep pushing the limits.”
At the end her remarks, Chef Nicola also teased a new concept that could soon be coming to downtown.
“Stay tuned. We’re working on Hemisfair, so be on the lookout.”
Editor’s pick: If those pictures from The Battery seem a little blue and cloudy, it’s because they were shot on my recent trip back in the beginning of the month. Luckily it was only about 34º when I took that photo. However, two nights before, temps had gone down to as low as 3º. Definitely don’t miss those frigid temperatures, but I still had a great time seeing Warrie Price’s legacy.
