San Antonio’s Diwali Festival of Lights returns to Hemisfair this Saturday, Nov. 5 for its 14th annual event.

This year’s event holds special significance as it also marks the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of India. Representatives of the Indian government will be in attendance at this year’s event.

The free festival is co-hosted by the City of San Antonio + Anuja SA and showcases San Antonio’s Sister-City Agreement with Chennai, India.

“DiwaliSA is a one-of-a-kind festival which brings people of all ages and walks of life to celebrate together,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “It is also a time of reflection — to consider the challenges faced by ourselves and others. But the Festival of Light reminds us that no matter the difficulties, light triumphs over darkness. Together we can spread a message of compassion, peace, harmony, diversity, and inclusion. And to all those who are celebrating this joyous event, I wish you, your families, and loved ones a Happy Diwali.”

Here’s what you can expect at this year’s festival:
  • Indian dance performances
  • A river parade at the Arneson River Theater
  • Ceremonial release of 2,000 diyas into the river
  • An Indian bazaar in Hemisfair
  • A Bollywood dance party
  • Henna, sari wrapping, and turban wrapping
  • A fireworks spectacular

The Briscoe Western Art Museum is hosting the only local screening of the new documentary, “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” with a member of the film’s production team.

The documentary celebrates the vast landscape of Texas through its wildlife, spanning from the highest peaks in West Texas to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico — and is narrated by native Texas actor Matthew McConaughey. This family-friendly film features animals including the blind catfish, mountain lions, Mexican freetail bats, and even the bison herd of Caprock Canyons State Park.

Tickets to the Nov. 10 screening cost $14. Of course popcorn, candy, and drinks will be available for purchase — museum members receive free admission and movie snacks.

After the screening, producer Katy Bladock will be present for a Q+A. Guests will also be able to view the museum’s current exhibits, including “A Life in the Wild” featuring the photographs of Thomas D. Mangelson.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Amy.

Editor’s pick: It’s hard to believe, but the end of Daylight Saving is coming up this weekend — and with it the flurry of the holiday season. One of my family’s favorite traditions as the days get shorter is hitting the Stars + Stripes drive-in theater (and stopping at Buc-ee’s for snacks along the way, of course).
