There is no denying that our connection to food is deeply rooted in thousands of years of rich culinary history.

That is why in 2017, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated the Alamo City as a Creative City of Gastronomy , making it the second city in the US to receive this recognition.

We continue to celebrate this honor with community-wide foodie initiatives, workshops + demonstrations throughout the year. During the month of May, we commemorate corn as a heritage ingredient found in many of our foods with a multi-city celebration called Pueblos de Maíz.

🌽 What is Pueblos de Maíz?

This celebration aims to inform and educate the community about the making of maíz (known as Nixtamalization ) which dates back 3,500+ years. This process is the foundation for foods created from corn masa today and is seen in our local restaurants (or even your dinner table).

We are one of three Creative Cities participating in this month-long initiative. Other cities include:

🌽 How can I participate?

  • Visit local restaurants to try their special corn dishes in celebration of this initiative — customers will also have the opportunity to snag a free commemorative postcard.
  • Sign up for the interactive corn workshop hosted by local Chef Johnny Hernandez + Mexican Chef Roberto Solis.
  • Take advantage of cooking at home with one of the community recipes submitted by San Antonio residents.
