Table of Contents

Every year in February, San Antonio hosts one of the largest music educator conventions in the US bringing over 12,000 Texas school music educators for one spectacular weekend.

After a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) convention is finally back — and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Whether you’re looking to attend or trying to avoid downtown traffic — and trust us, there’s going to be a lot of it — here are some important facts you should know.

What is TMEA?

  • A four-day convention bringing together over 30,000 attending from across the country.
  • The convention is held at the Henry B. González Convention Center and will run from Thurs., Feb. 9-Sat., Feb.12
  • More than 1,300 exhibitors from all aspects in the music industry will be present.
  • ~280 workshops are hosted across four days by music education experts
  • The convention also serves to showcase the All-State ensemble performances (more on that later).

Who should go to TMEA?

  • High school students — those interested in pursuing music in higher education can benefit from attending College Night on Fri., Feb. 11. from 5-8 p.m. in the Exhibit Hall.
  • College students and Professionals in music — there are no shortage of resources for those looking to innovate their pedagogical skills.
  • Anyone, everyone If you’re interested in watching some of the most impressive classical, jazz, and chorale performances from around the country, TMEA is for you. This will be Editor Ivan’s eighth year attending.

Let’s talk traffic and parking

  • Between TMEA and the Coffee Festival, the heart of San Antonio will without a doubt be a hotspot for both auto + foot traffic. We’re talking anywhere from two-to-three times longer for your average commute.
  • Parking rates for private garages will most likely see a hike in pricing leading up and through the weekend (Think: $20+ garages). Pro tip: plan to arrive early to find cheaper metered parking.

Beyond the convention

  • The River Walk will be an exciting hub spot during the convention dates with thousands of pedestrians roaming along the river — be prepared for longer wait times for table-service restaurants.
  • Hotels anywhere near Downtown will most likely see sold out room availability. If you’re looking for a unique stay, check out our conversation on stunning hotels around the city.
