Our city’s Minor League Baseball team, the San Antonio Missions, swing into their 121st season tomorrow night against the Frisco Roughriders, at 7:05 p.m. at Wolff Stadium. But don’t be confused when you see different uniforms and logos.
For the first time since 2018, the Missions will transform into The Flying Chanclas for 12 regular season games. The Chanclas is the team’s Hispanic-themed alter ego, part of the league’s Copa de la Diversión (Fun Cup) promotion, started as a way to celebrate and honor MILB’s Hispanic fans and communities.
A historic season
In 2022, the newly formed Designated Bidders LLC acquired The Elmore Group. This is the first time since 1987 the team will be under local ownership.
New investors include local legends Manu Giniboli, Peter Holt, and David Robinson. Fun fact: Reid Ryan, son of iconic baseball player Nolan Ryan, is also an investor.
Know before you go
Opening Day festivities kick off at 5:30 p.m., when the stadium gates open. Tickets can still be purchased in advance or day-of ($2+) — the box office opens at 10 a.m. on game days.
Join the festivities
- Local mariachi group, Mariachi Damas de Jalisco, will treat fans with live music.
- Texas National Guard will do a flyover before opening pitch — two F-16s flown by the 149th Fighter Wing + 182nd Fighter Squadron Gunfighters.
- Mayor Ron Nirenberg will throw out the first pitch to basketball legend David Robinson.
- Stevenson Middle School will perform the national anthem, while players from the South Texas Heat Baseball Academy take the field with the Missions.
$2 Tuesdays
The season opener will also bring a new promotion — AARP’s $2 Tuesday. Every Tuesday home game, fans can guy $2 outfield reserved, bullpen reserved + berm tickets, plus parking.
That’s not all ... the promotion also includes $2 draft beers, sausage wraps, Bill Miller sweet tea, and pizza slices from Sophia’s.
