Join the sourdough revolution in San Antonio

The bread type is more popular than ever, and we’re here to help you find the best loaves in our city, or start making your own.

Two loaves of bread sit on a wooden table. Sun is casting shadows and lighting up their floury artwork atop them.

Sourdough can blur the line between art and food.

Starter your engines. Sourdough is soaring in popularity, even more than it was in 2020 according to Google Trends, and so is interest in making your own.

If you’re among those baking some new habits into your life via flour and yeast, here are a few ways to get in on the action in San Antonio:

  • The fine folks at The Bread Box host a range of breadmaking classes, including sourdough-centric ones.
  • Classes hosted at Chocalatl are led by professional chef Alessia Benavides, who was awarded the title of Best Pastry Chef of 2024 by the Texas Culinary Association.
  • Keep your eyes on Over the Top Cake Supplies’ calendar — their two San Antonio stores are always brimming with those starting out their sourdough journey.

For those who prefer their loaves made by an expert, there’s a bunch of spots around town to get your fill of doughy goodness. We’re fans of the jalapeño cheddar sourdough at Broadway Deli Bread, the pesto sourdough focaccia at Spread the Loaves, and the classic loaf at any of La Panadería’s four locations.

Pro tip: If you’re picking up treats at any of San Antonio’s bakeries, from our experience, the apron-laden are typically willing to offer some friendly advice for beginner bakers eager to learn more.
