San Antonio’s top-ranked barbecue spots

Texas Monthly ranked a San Antonio-area spot as its No. 1 pick, with other local spots earning recognition on it’s “Best BBQ Joints” list.

A tray of barbecue snacks from Burnt Bean Co. features crispy pork rinds, deviled eggs, spicy pickles, pimento cheese dip, a smoked sausage link, and glazed brisket slices. The food is arranged neatly on brown butcher paper over a white tray. Everything sits on a rustic wooden table.

This barbecue is a must-try.

No barbecue sizzles like Texas barbecue, and the team at Texas Monthly sampled 319 restaurants in the state to find its “50 Best BBQ Joints in Texas.” If you’re looking for the biggest flavors, look no further than the San Antonio area.

The top spot

Burnt Bean Co. earned the No. 1 spot, and for good reason. This Seguin barbecue restaurant is about 40 minutes from downtown San Antonio and makes all of its offerings in-house. It’s known to draw a crowd, and everyone has their own favorite item, whether it’s the brisket, jalapeno cheddar sausage, or hot Cheeto queso mac.

Try this: “Brass Monkey” sandwich with queso mac, sausage + brisket — and a side of bacon ranch taters.

More in San Antonio

Beyond the top spot, the San Antonio area has more mouthwatering barbecue spots that Texas Monthly recognized.

  • 2M Smokehouse — Head to this Michelin Guide-recognized spot for the smoked brisket + menu items that incorporate Mexican American flavors.
  • Reese Bros Barbecue — This restaurant has sausage, brisket, and pork spare ribs. If we have one recommendation, it’s to save room for dessert.
  • Pinkerton’s Barbecue — This Houston-based spot also has an Alamo City location that offers the same great smoked meats and sides.
  • Black Board Bar B Q — This Sisterdale spot earned an honorable mention, with special praise for its half-pound burgers.
  • Nik’s Not Normal — Another honorable mention, this Canyon Lake restaurant puts brisket at the center of its menu, but this traditional barbecue offering is made exceptionally well.
