There’s no business like show business —and the Alamo City is no exception. Catch a national tour at the Majestic and Empire Theatres, see a 100A production at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, or support local arts this summer by attending other top-tier regional and community theater productions right here in San Antonio.
What else is a must-see? We’re glad you asked.
“Sister Act” | Wonder Theatre
Get back in the habit with this hit musical based on the 1992 film, directed by Megan Boneta and music directed by Andrew Hendley. It runs now through Sunday, Aug. 3 in the Wonderland of the Americas mall.
“Hairspray” | San Pedro Playhouse
Travel back in time to the 1960s with this toe-tapping musical at the historic San Pedro Playhouse. Directed by Deonte Warren and music directed by Jaime Ramirez, it opens Friday, July 18 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 17.
“Dragons Love Tacos” | Magik Theatre
Downtown’s Magik Theatre and Director Anthony Runfola present this slapstick comedy, based on a beloved children’s book, now through Sunday Aug. 3. Inspired by art forms like commedia dell’arte and classic clowning, it’s recommended for audiences ages 3 and up.
“The Importance of Being Earnest” | Teatro Audaz
Teatro Audaz presents this hilariously reimagined — and gender-swapped — classic-with-a-twist comedy by Oscar Wilde. Directed by Ana Martinez, this show opened Thursday, July 17 and runs through Sunday, July 27.
“Calling” | Overtime Theater
Check out “Calling” by San Antonio playwright Georgie Lee and directed by Saphire Mendez, running weekends through Aug. 2. We love seeing local work produced by local playwrights — and the Overtime in its new location on Vance Jackson is San Antonio’s prime spot to see new writers make their mark.
