Great Scott — If you watched the Superbowl over the weekend chances are you saw the DeLorean Motor Company tease its new Electric Vehicle (EV) Model.
Well, this comeback comes with some exciting news for the Alamo City. The all-new EV production enterprise named its global headquarters Port San Antonio.
Here’s what you need to know about this watt-worthy news.
While there are no renderings of the HQ on the Port San Antonio campus (yet), we do know that this iconic automotive brand selected Port SA as its home base for its proximity to the $60 million development of the Tech Port Center + Arena.
The innovative space will allow for the company to have:
- Lab space for prototyping new technologies.
- A 3,200-seat arena that can accommodate product launches, specialized training, conventions + more.
The San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology + an industry showroom that will help connect locally-based innovations with potential buyers.
Editor Ivan spoke to Jim Perschbach, President and CEO of Port San Antonio, who shared his insight on the DeLorean Motor Company’s new hub:
“So in the short-term we’ve got some plans to put them into some existing office and engineering space that we already have here on campus.
But in the long term…we build a couple of office buildings over the past couple of years that we’ve completely leased. So we were looking for a project that’ll help us launch our new even bigger, even nicer office building and this is just a beautiful way to do that. Relatively soon here we expect to announce that we will be launching some new construction and some new facilities that’ll ultimately host not only [DeLorean Motor Company] but some of the other growth we have coming.”
We also spoke to greater:SATX, who is a part of this major development and is leading the way for San Antonio’s economic growth and development, this is what they had to say about how this new development will impact our city:
“DeLorean is back with a new electric vehicle and San Antonio HQ. A globally recognized brand, DeLorean will provide more than 450 high-paying job opportunities for San Antonians in executive, engineering and management roles. greater:SATX is strategically focused on attracting high impact, target industry employers to San Antonio. This is just the beginning to what will be a year of tremendous growth for the SATX region.”
Along with jobs, DeLorean plans to work in partnership with local universities like Texas A&M University-San Antonio, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Trinity University, + more to create opportunities and educational resources that will develop a pipeline of skilled professionals
The approval of the DeLorean HQ is contingent on final approvals of various incentive packages. We will keep you updated with new information and developments, in the meantime, you can find more information on the greater:SATX website.
Perschbach left us with closing remarks about the future of San Antonio leading the way in the technology industry.
“…look for a lot to come with the integration of electric transportation systems into everything from robotics, to space exploration to aircraft.”
