If you’re new to San Antonio, we’re excited for you. We’ll assume you have already checked out our guide to new resident essentials and move on to of our must-dos... and some maybe-don’ts.

Must do

  • Get outdoors — we’ve fallen for the Alamo City’s plentiful parks and places to paddle around.
  • Take advantage of the museum scene — don’t forget about free admission days.
  • Try something new — we keep track of the biggest events in town each month for you. Reader Angel S. says, “explore the neighborhoods and events.”
  • Reader Catherine S. suggests you, “Drive frequently around the city in order learn & see the diversity of our city.”
  • Reader Steve A. recommends that new residents, “Take advantage of the free museum days at the various museums, Witte, SAMA, Briscoe, etc.”

Maybe not

  • Mispronounce Bexar — it’s not “bex-ar.” Many pronounce it “bear.”
  • Underestimate the heat — it can get up to 108º here. Reader Jeff T. especially advises against taking a “workout in the heat.”
  • Forget to plan for traffic — San Antonio ranks No. 21 in a recent report of the most traffic-heavy cities in the US.
  • Reader Jessica T. says “Don’t eat the tamale husk.” (But Jessica does highly recommend breakfast tacos.)
  • And several readers warned new residents to avoid falling in the river.
